The town of Carrollton has a very dark and troublesome past. Situated around the Pickens County Courthouse. As the courthouse square was used frequently as a site for public lynching's by whites, of African Americans. It was part of a program of intimidation and racial terrorism, part of numerous efforts to suppress the African American people. During a time of high tensions, as whites struggled for dominance, with many senseless and barbaric murders, that were frequent in the decades on either side of the turn of the 20th century. On November 16th, 1876, the people of Carrollton, Alabama, watched as the their courthouse burned to the ground, for a second time. The townspeople demanded vengeance for the arson, and despite a lack of circumstantial evidence, the people of Carrollton started pointing fingers at a freedman in town, Henry Wells, as a suspect for the arson. Starting what would ultimately become, one of the state of Alabama's most bizarre stories of the supernatural and the unexplained. Pictured on a pane of glass.. the Face in the Courthouse Window.
