On June 19, 1914, 237 men went down into the Hillcrest Mine at 7 a.m. At 9:30 a.m., the entire area was shaken by a huge explosion from the mine. By the end of the day, only 48 men had emerged alive. It remains to this day the deadliest mining disaster in Canadian history.
