show moreCliff led the band from garage thrash to sophisticated, progressive heights thanks in large part to his songwriting ability and phenomenal bass skills on the band’s first three studio albums, including the masterpiece Master of Puppets from 1986. Sadly, Cliff's life came to an early end. He was just 24 when he died in a tour bus crash in Sweden on September 27th, 1986. Following his passing, Metallica went on to massive global success but even they admit they’ve never pushed the creative envelope as radically as they had during the first four years of their career.
To coincide with the 40th anniversary of Metallica’s debut album Kill ‘Em All, McIver’s revised and updated edition of To Live Is To Die [originally published in 2009] adds a new chapter that looks at Cliff’s legacy from a fresh perspective and includes commentary from current Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo and Aquaman star Jason Momoa as well as an eyewitness account of the opening of the Cliff Burton Museum in Sweden in 2022. Testament bassist Steve Di Giorgio also adds his memories of meeting Cliff as a teen and then watching he and his band Metallica begin to take off.
We’ll talk about the life and career of Cliff Burton and some of what’s in this brand new edition of To Live Is To Die in this episode with author Joel McIver!
