Three generations of one family climb down into the womb of a goddess to steal gold from Hastar, the son she was never supposed to bear. Rahi Anil Barve's Tumbbad, starring Sohum Shah, was written in 2008, couldn't find money until 2012 and took six years to make. It has no musical numbers, a Jesper Kyd score and a 1947 world that feels entirely real apart from one terrible thing in it. It was Father Malone's first Indian film, and it sent him away calling it one of the best horror films of the last twenty years.
The Bollywood Cinema Club's Chris Stachiw, the Doctor of Podcasting, and Father Malone (Midnight Viewing) talk the Evil Dead remake as a fellow traveler in grime and greed, a second act that explains everything with images, the army of Hastars, Jesper Kyd's score, a sequel that still hasn't come, and why a bleak ending and a new creature beat another Michael Myers movie.
