Psychological symptoms include difficulty concentrating, sadness, anger, irritability, anxiety, and feeling disoriented at times. Depression is not a normal part of grief, but a complication of it.
To distinguish normal grief from depression, it's important to understand the patterns. Normal grief occurs in waves or bursts and then is followed by periods of respite. A chronic low mood and feelings of despair may indicate a major depressive episode. Another indicator of normal grief compared to a more serious depressive state is whether you're able to be consoled, maintain a sense of humor, and your self-esteem. A depressed state includes a struggle with feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and a lack of engagement in activities that previously brought you pleasure or joy.
It is important to honor the grieving process whether it begins immediately or takes time to develop. Everyone grieves differently. The most helpful ways to work through and overcome grief are allowing time to heal, making self-care a priority, and accepting support among family and friends while avoiding self-isolation.
