show moreOur specialty is small furry exotics including, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, mice and rabbits. Wee Companions has been rescuing small animals since 1998. Since inception, we have taken in over 15,500 animals. This is quite a feat when you realize that we are a volunteer-based organization that is operated out of individual homes. Our funding comes from the generosity of supporters like you, we receive no government monies.
Mission Statement:
Our mission is to rescue guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, and other small exotic mammals from shelters, places of abandonment, and from persons relinquishing their pets. Whenever possible, we offer a safe house to these animals, irrespective of age, temperament, or health status. These animals will receive veterinary care and socialization in the hopes that they will be placed in a "forever" home. Animals given Sanctuary Status will be placed in our Foster Care Network to live out their lives in comfort and with love. We are also focused on educating foster parents, school children and others on the care, feeding and prevention of unwanted litters of these animals.
Fenella Speece, President
In 1996 Fenella visited an adoption event in Balboa Park and became the proud “mum” of a male guinea pig called Sam. As a newcomer to San Diego, this was her first exposure to the local rescue community. Hearing that many small animals were in need of rescue, Fenella joined with other fellow small animal lovers to create the foundation of Wee Companions. She was instrumental in establishing the rescue as a 501(c)(3) and has remained the President of the rescue since 2003.
An RN with a special passion for small animals, she has led the volunteer based organization to become a respected, thriving rescue and adoption agency that networks with shelters all over California. She has travelled to the UK to study at the renowned Cavy Hospital at Cambridge Cavy Trust, and has established working relationships with multiple vets who support her work and help care for the rescue animals.
Being an animal lover, she is usually surrounded by her dogs, cats, tortoises, rabbits and guinea pigs. She loves sitting by her pond enjoying her Koi fish or riding her horses. “I can’t imagine life without my animals, we are all connected and here to take care of each other.”#
