28 JAN 2020 · My fabulous friends, this is Part Three, The final part of my three-part podcast series with Google’s Cathy Pearl. Today we discuss creating a persona, or developing a character for the voice assistance like Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant.
Her book, “Designing Voice User Interfaces” teaches us how voice assistants are put together. What makes Cathy fabulous is that she is not only an expert, she is a teacher: she breaks down complex concepts and algorithms into plain english and teaches them to us with great examples and analogies. Below is Part Threo of three podcasts I recently did with her:
Thanks to voice assistants like Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant, soon we will talk to our computers as easily as we talk to our fellow humans. Speech recognition is rapidly improving, and we can look forward to a seamless experience as we work, watch video, listen to podcasts, or do errands hands-free: moving from our phones to our cars to our homes.
The technical term for these voice assistants is VUI or voice-user interface, and the “wizards behind the curtain” who create the voice experience are known as VUI conversation designers,
content strategists, or UX/UI writers. This is a very exciting, rapidly growing career and I want you to hear from the industry leaders.
I dream of the day when we can talk to computers as easily as we speak to each other, and computers will become much more powerful, convenient tools than we can imagine. Join me in learning from the experts of this burgeoning field.

22 JAN 2020 · Nate Treloar is one of the leaders of Orbita.ai, a company that works with the Mayo Clinic and big hospitals to bring “healthcare virtual assistants” into the hospital rooms and homes of patients to help with their care. 15 JAN 2020 · Emily Lonetto makes it easy for anyone to create apps for Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. Her company, Voiceflow.com, is bringing democracy to the mushrooming industry of voice assistants like Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant.
Until now, only advanced coders could create apps for voice assistants, but Voiceflow has created a template where any creative person can script out a dialogue for their voice app and then Voiceflow automatically writes the code behind-the-scenes to make that app chat with users simply and beautifully.
I love Voiceflow because it knocks down the fortress that previously contained only coders within its walls. Now, we all can create beautiful voice apps easily, and make our contribution to voice-driven computing. That’s diversity, that’s access, and that’s creativity.
