Discover the enchanting world of Amoretti, a captivating sequence of 89 sonnets penned by Edmund Spenser, echoing the rich tradition of Renaissance poetry. Though often overshadowed by the works of his contemporaries like William Shakespeare and Sir Philip Sidney, Spensers collection deserves a fresh audience. Written in 1594 and published the following year, these little love poems break from convention by celebrating a real and attainable love—Elizabeth Boyle, whom Spenser ultimately married. Unlike other poets who lamented unrequited passions for distant muses, Spensers verses reflect his genuine pursuit of romance, capturing both the struggles and triumphs of wooing. With elaborate imagery, clever metaphors, and a delightful touch of humor, the sonnets navigate the complexities of love, infusing passion with wit. Some poems sparkle with originality, while others reveal a playful sensuality. Join Leonard Wilson as he introduces these timeless works, showcasing their emotional depth and artistic merit.
