These are questions that have been weighing on the minds of many people for quite a long time now. Even today, with all our advances in technology and in science, we still cannot say with any certainty whether or not we are the only intelligent lifeform in this universe. With each new discovery (such as finding more planets outside our solar system), our chances to find extraterrestrial life diminishes at an alarming rate. On top of that, it's dangerous to assume that there's nothing out there waiting for us - because we don't know if Earth is just a tiny speck on some vast and unsuspecting collision course with another planet. And with each new discovery, our chances to find extraterrestrial life diminishes at an alarming rate.

Still, the questions remain: Are we alone? Are there other sentient beings 'out there'? It seems very likely that we are not alone in this universe. There are estimated to be over 100 billion galaxies in this universe, and there may be as many as 100 billion planets in each galaxy. If just one out of every million stars in our galaxy has a planet capable of supporting life similar to ours, and if only one out of every million planets has a similar race of sentient lifeforms, that would make 10 million such civilizations in the Milky Way.
