5 JUL 2024 · This week's spotlight is on the American Legion Post 66 for Around the Cracker Barrel Special Guest this week are Past Commander of the American Legion Post 66 John Dale and Current Food and Beverage Manager and Sons of the American Legion Commander Tom Lapadat. Talking with Guy Atchley we can find out more about the American Legion Post 66, when it was founded, and all of the great things that they do for our community and for our veterans. Both share the story of wearing Red on Friday's representing those serving.  Scholarships are also part of the discussion and how they are applied.  Also discussed are the hours open as well as some of the food specialties including Breakfast in a Bag. What is a typical day at the American Legion Post? From Lunches to Evening Activities, there is always something happening. The American Veterans Traveling Tribute will be visiting the Post 66 on October 5th and 6th, John and Tom tells us about the logistics behind this. There is also a Veteran Benefits Coordinator which can help Veterans aquire benefits.  The American Legion itself has done much work for Veterans including the GI Bill. 21 JUN 2024 · Joining Guy Atchley for this Episode of Around the Cracker Barrel are two Green Valley residents from the Valle Verde Rotary Club, Jim and Kathie Rusk. Both Jim and Kathie have been involved in many fundraising events through the Rotary Club  to include "Community Challenges" for Nepal earthquake relief and Ukraine humanitarian aid. Jim and Kathy also share the story behind a couple of books they have written. The first is a day-by-day exchange of letters and tapes from Jim to Kathy while serving overseas in Vietnam, the book is entitled, "Love You". Both Jim and Kathy share great stories of a very different time. 14 JUN 2024 · For this Weeks Around the Cracker Barrel Joining host Guy Atchley will be Tim Saylor, Donna Harrison, and Dorrie Carrol from the Baja Sporting Club. In this informative segment, we learn about the Baja Sporting Club, who can join, and what their purpose is. The Baja Sporting Club stands for the Born-Again Jocks Association. It’s about the love for the outdoors and sports. We learn of the requirements to join which include to be Over 50 and live within the community. It's current membership is upwards of 340 members. Many Sponsors have helped to make fun sporting events possible including  Insurance Center of Green Valley, Jeff Lafaves Edward Jones, Shawn Smith with Keller Williams Realty, Scott Chancellor with Realty executives, 2 girls Pizza Ben Venuto, 2 Girls Pizzeria and Bistro,  3 1/2 Happy Barbers, Longhorn Grill and bar and Triple Play Sports Complex   The many different sports leagues throughout the season for Softball, Bowling and Golf are discussed. 7 JUN 2024 · Joining Guy Atchley for this Week’s Around the Cracker Barrel,  the Animal League of Green Valley's president Kim Eisele. With the excess heat that we are experiencing now in Southern Arizona, what kind of precautions should we be taking and what should we be aware of in caring for our four-legged best friends? Kim reminds us of the dangers of leaving pets inside vehicles when out and about, also when taking the dog for a walk, the Asphalt becomes super-hot.  If during these hot summer months, a dog overheats – What is a tip on a safe way to cool them off?  Kim tells us about a recent study regarding larger dogs and how it has been a challenge to get them adopted. Kim tells us about the Website and how visitors could take a look at a dog or cat ready for adoption. Volunteers make us so much of The Animal League of Green Valley, there is a program during the summer giving school kids the opportunity to work with the animals.  Adult volunteers are also needed. 31 MAY 2024 · Joining Guy Atchley on this week's "Around the Cracker Barrel" is Jewel Farra Owen, the Constitution Week Committee Chair for the Madera Canyon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Ms. Owen is sharing everything to know about the mission and purpose of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and its goal to celebrate the Constitution of the United States. We learn the Latest about La Posada, The Cutting-Edge, Nationally In-dependent, NonProfit Organization which Maximizes the well being of seniors, Based right here in Green Valley/Sahuarita. We learn of the opportunities for the General Public to find out more of La Posada Communities with various services such as the Farmers Market, Concerts or even a Red Cross Blood Drive! 17 MAY 2024 · For this week's “Around the Cracker Barrel” Broadcast, Guy Atchley focuses on Education in Green Valley/Sahuarita.  With school in the process of wrapping up for another year, Dr Manuel Valenzuela is a special guest on the Show. Dr Valenzuela, Superintendent for the Sahuarita Unified School District speaks with Guy Atchley about some of the highlights of the school year and some of the great accomplishments that are noteworthy from Faculty and Student. We also learn about the new Digital School and why this direction was looked at for education.  With 10 schools in the Sahuarita Unified School District, close to 6300 students benefit from the coursework within public education. The Growth of the Town of Sahuarita is also touched upon and how that plays into Education.
