An eight-time NBA all-star, Mutombo passed away surrounded by his family after a battle with brain cancer.

“On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others,” Silver added, noting Mutombo’s extensive humanitarian work.
Mutombo, who played 18 seasons in the NBA, worked tirelessly to improve living conditions in his native Democratic Republic of Congo through his personal foundation.

Happy birthday Kayla Chandra!
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is a cool 20 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning.
In Rugby Union: Results from all the big rugby overnight: In Wellington New Zealand, the All Blacks 33-13 the Wannabies.
And in the deep, dark jungles of Africa, the Springboks 48-7 Los Pumas and in the WXV3 Tests in Dubai yesterday: Fijiana 38-3 Hong Kong China and Manu Sina Samoa 8-8 the Netherlands.
In the NRL semifinal yesterday: The Panthers booked a spot in their fifth-straight grand-final, after a 26-6 beat up of the Sharks.
However, all eyes will be on Nathan Cleary after he looked to aggravate an existing shoulder injury, leaving the field with five minutes left on the clock.
On Friday night, Lord Nelson Asofa-Solomona was sin-binned for a high shot on Sydney Roosters prop Lindsay Collins in the first hit up of the game, which resulted in the Queensland enforcer failing his HIA and bingo the Roosters were gone for the night.
The Melbourne Storm roasted them 48-18, to book their place in next week’s big dance.
In Boxing: Watch out for 12 October, Artur Beterbiev who is 20-0, all by KO versus Dmitry Bivol at 23-0, but only 12 by KO will meet for the undisputed World Light Heavyweight title, on a stacked Riyadh Season card.
It’s a fight many in the boxing world have been waiting for, and it’s finally happening.
On the undercard, unbeaten Samoan-Aussie Cruiserweight King Jai Opetaia at 25-0, 19 by KO returns to action, defending his IBF title against Jack Massey.
In Sports Biz: A good week for the WNBA - their first round finals brought record-setting viewership, driven by the games between Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun.
While game 1 averaged 1.8 million viewers on ABC, the second game drew 2.5 million viewers on ESPN - a record number for a WNBA game on cable television.
The other three finals series did not perform anywhere near the Fever–Sun series, but the second game of each series drew more viewers, including 1.2 million for the Minnesota Lynx versus Phoenix Mercury.
In the NFL: The Kansas City Chiefs quest for a third straight Super Bowl is off to a strong start at 3–0 despite star tight end Travis Kelce averaging just 23 receiving yards per game.
But Kelce’s pop superstar squeeze, Taylor Swift has helped the franchise overtake the Dallas Cowboys as the NFL’s most-watched team - the Chiefs having appeared in three of the five highest-viewed telecasts in 2024.
Patrick Mahomes, Harrison Butker – the kicker, and Kelce are also high on the NFL’s sales of player-branded merchandise.
Go Swiftees Go Chiefs Go!

Happy birthday Ruby Keil-Philp!
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is a near record freezing 19 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning.
In Rugby Union: OILEI things are going from bad to worse for Interim Fiji Rugby Union Chairperson Peter Mazey – not one Provincial Rugby Union in Fiji has spoken out in support of Rugby House in their stoush with the players over pay!
And their Annual General Meeting is just around the corner.
Thank goodness, the WXV3 Tests starting in Dubai tomorrow are a welcome distraction: At 2AM Fiji time it’s Fijiana vs Hong Kong China and at 4:30AM Apia time Samoa play the Netherlands.
In Rugby League BREAKING NEWS: The Broncos have sacked Head Coach Kevin Walters after a brutal review into their disappointing 2024 season.
The Courier Mail reported the Broncos terminated the contract of the Club legend last night, while an anonymous source with knowledge of the situation told SMH, that it was a mutual decision.
The Broncos later put out a statement claiming it was Kevie’s decision to quit the Club.
In Football: Man U boss Erik10 slammed his Manchester United flops, after a costly mistake from Christian Eriksen condemned them to a 1-1 draw against FC Twente, in their Europa League opener.
Eriksen’s 35th-minute blast put United ahead, but the Danish midfielder gifted Twente their second-half equaliser at Old Trafford.
Same old same old!
In Combat Sports: Win on 12 October against former Commonwealth Champion Liam Cameron in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is the key to big money fights in the US for rising British boxing Light Heavyweight star, Ben Whittaker, according to his promoter.
In Sports Biz: Caitlin Clark’s run in the WNBA postseason lasted just two games.
The Indiana Fever were swept out of the playoffs following an 81-87 loss to the Connecticut Sun yesterday at the Mohegan Sun Arena, Conneticut, where Clark scored 25, dished out 9 assists and grabbed six rebounds.
Attendance for the entire WNBA is up nearly 50% this year, and Indiana leads all teams with an average attendance of 17,035, up 319% from last year.
The Atlanta Dream, Las Vegas Aces and Washington Mystics all moved games to bigger arenas, when they hosted the Fever.
Merchandise sales are also up 450% for the WNBA, according to Fanatics, and Clark was the top-selling player and fifth among all athletes across all sports in the US.
Until Next Year, Caitlin
In the NFL: Is Taylor Swift affecting Travis Kelce’s on-field performance?
Kelce has caught only eight passes for 69 yards and no touchdowns through three games this season.
“Are we not allowed to say that he’s out of shape?” NFL analyst Todd McShay asked? “That he’s been partying all offseason? He’s been jet-setting around with the most famous person, probably in the entire world.”
His superstar quarterback, Patrick Mahomes looks at it differently: “We’re calling a lot of plays for Travis, and it’s like two or three people are going to him.”
A contract extension this offseason gave Kelce the highest annual average salary among Tight Ends at US$17Million.
Off the field, Kelce and his brother, Jason, cashed in with a three-year, US$100M deal to sell the rights to their podcast – “New Heights”, to the Amazon-owned publisher Wondery.

Happy birthday Vickie Swanson!
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is a very comfortable 23 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning.
In Rugby Union: OILEI things are going from bad to worse for Interim Fiji Rugby Union Chairperson Peter Mazey – their High Performance Unit General Manager, BJ Mather has resigned after only one year in the role.
Thank goodness, the WXV3 Tests in Dubai on Saturday will be a welcome distraction.
In Rugby League: Known as a rugby league-mad nation, Papua New Guinea is seriously in the mix to be the NRL’s 19th team, as early as 2028, as revealed by NRL Chairman Peter V’Landys and CEO Andrew Abdo yesterday.
In Netball: The mighty Australian Diamonds claimed another series win over England with a 69-56 win in Bendigo last night.
After dropping game two in historic circumstances in Sydney, Australia bounced back and put the Roses to the sword with a statement win to claim the series 2-1.
In Sports Biz: Here’s even more proof of the amazing Caitlin Clark Effect.
Game 1 between Clark’s Indiana Fever and the Connecticut Sun, of the WNBA finals play-off, averaged 1.8 million viewers on ABC - making it the WNBA’s most-watched playoff game since the 2000 Finals, and the most-watched playoff game on ESPN platforms ever, despite airing directly against the NFL’s games.
That number more than doubles the 728,000 average viewership of the 2023 WNBA Finals.
While the Fever-Sun contest set a playoff viewership record, the three other WNBA playoffs that aired on ESPN, all averaged less than the 2023 playoffs:
· The Atlanta Dream vs New York Liberty game drew 410,000 viewers,
· The Phoenix Mercury vs Minnesota Lynx averaged 403,000 viewers,
· The defending champion Las Vegas Aces vs the Seattle Storm, drew 461,000 viewers.
As they say in the good ol’ days – “the proof is in the pudding!”
In Combat Sports: Promoter Frank Warren has defended Saudi Arabia's involvement in boxing, after criticism surrounding the singing of the Saudi national anthem in the ring before the fight began.
Speaking at a news conference, Warren said Saudi support "enabled" Dubois-Joshua to happen. "Why is there criticism? A small minority complaining about the national anthem being played," Warren said.
"These type of events would not be made without financial input. It's for the love of boxing from His Excellency Alalshikh that has made that happen. Did you hear anyone moaning?"

Happy birthday Linda Benson!
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is a very nice 22 degrees Celsius again at 5am this morning.
In Rugby Union: OUCH things are going from bad to worse for Fiji Rugby Union – their High Performance Unit General Manager, BJ Mather has resigned after only one year in the role.
This, while several players say they had to fork out for team expenses on their July northern tour, after the FRU Credit card was rejected for insufficient funds.
In Rugby League: Kangaroos Head Coach, Mal Meninga and the NRL are filthy with Kalyn Ponga, for his decision to make himself unavailable for Australia – for next month’s Pacific Championships.
NRL rules state that players must make themselves available for representative games unless they are injured, which Ponga is not, and so the Newcastle Knights superstar could even be sanctioned over it.
In Football: La Liga has confirmed that Real Madrid will take on FC Barcelona in the Spanish domestic league – “El Clasico” on Saturday 26th October, with a 9pm kick-off local time.
The match-up will be the first competitive meeting between the teams since Hansi Flick took over the Catalan side, who are leading La Liga with a perfect record of 18 points from six games this season.
Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid are four points behind in second place, but will welcome the Catalans to the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in the Spanish capital, for this fixture, where they remain unbeaten this season.
In Sports Biz: There is finally a buyer for NBA legend Michael Jordan’s Chicago-area mansion.
According to TMZ, Jordan’s palatial property in Highland Park, Illinois, which was first listed in 2012 for US$29Million, is finalizing sold to an unknown buyer for US$14.8M.
In Combat Sports: “Kaboom” is what Anthony Joshua said describes the impact of Daniel Dubois’ monstrous right hand punch that knocked him down in the opening minutes of the opening round, of their World Heavyweight clash at Wembley on Sunday.
“Kaboom” alright AJ!
Only in America: Tennis legend Billie Jean King will be the first individual female athlete to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal - the highest civilian honor bestowed by the US Congress.
Past athletes to receive the award include Jackie Robinson, Jack Nicklaus, and the entire 1980 US Summer Olympic team.
A bill to honor King was introduced last September.
2024 is the 50th anniversary of “The Battle of the Sexes,” when she defeated Bobby Riggs in what is still the most-watched tennis match in history.
The bill has now passed the House of Representatives and according to the Associated Press, has been sent to President Joe Biden for his signature.

Happy birthday Jett Blake!
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is a very nice 22 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning.
In Rugby Union: On Sunday morning in the jungles of Argentina, Los Pumas 29-28 South Africa.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Water Flying Fijians have improved to 9th place in the World Rugby Rankings, after claiming a record sixth Pacific Nations Cup title with their 41-17 win over hosts Japan on Saturday night in Osaka.
In Rugby League: Reece Walsh has reportedly shaken hands on a contract extension with the Broncos, ending the star fullback’s contract saga, which has dragged on for 12 months.
It’s a coup for the Broncos to pull it off before the November 1 deadline that would have allowed rival Clubs to begin negotiating with Walsh.
As first reported by The Courier Mail, Walsh has signed with the Broncos through to the end of the 2029 season.
Heading into the 2025 season on A$600,000, Walsh’s new deal will be worth A$4.4Million across the following four years.
It makes Walsh the highest-paid player in the history of the Broncos — but the livewire 22-year-old could easily have got more.
“It’s a steal. It’s an absolute steal. If he stays on the field,” NRL legend Andrew Johns said.
Fellow NRL legend Brad Fittler also said: “From the Broncos’ point of view, it’s a bargain. Imagine how many Clubs out there would love to have Reece Walsh.”
In Netball: England star Helen Housby put on a “monster” performance with 29 goals from 33 shots plus 10 goal assists, combined with Liv Tchine who was deadly with 32 goals from 34 attempts, for England to claim only their third-ever win over Australia, in Australia, in Sydney yesterday.
Despite winning only one quarter of the thriller, the Roses snared a 61-59 win to ensure the series heads into a deciding Test in Bendigo on Wednesday night.
In WNBA Sports Biz: Indiana Fever are the underdogs against the Connecticut Sun in the first round of the WNBA finals play-offs, so Rookie of the Year, Caitlin Clark could very well be out of the playoffs after just two or three games.
That scenario would be the true showcase of Clark’s effect on viewership.
The WNBA should ultimately be satisfied with the playoff viewership results it will register for this unprecedented season.
But for those clamoring for ways to measure Clark’s impact on the WNBA, this postseason could serve as the proper barometer.
In Combat Sports: One of England’s favourite son’s, Anthony Joshua, who spent all of his career dodging Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, challenged Daniel Dubois for his IBF World Heavyweight title at a sold out Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, with 96,000 fans cheering him on, and AJ lost!
My grandma could beat him with her sasa broom - what a cup cake!

Later this morning, we tip South Africa to hugoporta Los Pumas in Argentina.
In Rugby League: Cometh the big game, cometh the man – James Tedesco was at his brilliant best in a “Man-of-the-Match” performance for the Sydney Roosters, to pluck the Manly Sea Eagles 16-40 last night, and advance to a preliminary final against the Melbourne Storm.
In Football: Graham Arnold has stepped down as Head Coach of the Socceroos, effectively immediately.
The 61-year-old former Australia and Sydney United representative has held the position since August 2018, was expected to take the Socceroos to the FIFA World Cup 2026, after signing a four-year deal following the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
During his six-year reign, Arnold steered Australia towards its best-ever finish at a FIFA World Cup, along with two quarter-final exits at the Asian Cup.
In Combat Sports: Anthony Joshua versus Daniel Dubois for his IBF World Heavyweight title at Wembley, London has sold out with 96,000 fans.
AJ is expected to pocket ten million pounds, and if he wins, set up a big money grab against “The Gypsy King” in Saudi Arabia.
And finally Sports Biz: LA Dodgers phenom Shohei Ohtani, already MLB’s biggest star, had a game for the ages on Thursday, burnishing his legend and becoming the league’s first player with 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season.
Ohtani reached the mark with a historic offensive onslaught that included three homers, six hits, two steals and 10 runs batted in during a 20–4 rout over the Marlins.
Now, the Dodgers, the networks and the MLB are all counting on Ohtani’s milestone to have significant business ramifications, to reverse baseball’s downward playoff ratings trend.
Within minutes of Ohtani hitting his 50th homer, MLB’s online shop offered a wide range of 50/50-themed merchandise, including T-shirts, water bottles, flags, signs, pennants, and several commemorative coins.
The wide-ranging product push builds on Ohtani’s standing as MLB’s most popular player jersey among fans, as well as an exclusive deal struck recently with Topps.
MLB’s YouTube channel, meanwhile, logged a league record nine million views Thursday, driven heavily by Ohtani highlights.
Ohtani now has 51 homers and 51 steals, making a 55/55 season or even a 60/60 one theoretically possible with nine games left in the Dodgers’ regular-season schedule.
Meanwhile, the home run ball for Ohtani’s 50th homer, was caught by a fan, and not returned to the team.
Estimates of its value in the collectibles market have already surpassed US$1Million.
Go Ohtani Go!
And that’s a wrap!
