  • Shimon HIrsch- Understanding Israel post October 7th

23 MAY 2024 · In this episode, I have the privilege of speaking with my friend Shimon Hirsch who is studying for his master's in Samaritan culture and takes us through a variety of topics, the first being the intricate historical ties between the Jewish and Samaritan communities, leveraging archaeological research to examine purity laws and religious practices. He endeavors to illuminate the common heritage and differences between these groups by scrutinizing the development of Samaritan laws and customs, notably during the concurrent evolution of Jewish Halakha. That is where we start but the conversation goes into details of October 7th that is from an insider's perspective. Shimon discusses the enduring issue of anti-Semitism across history, and underscores the significance of fortifying one's Jewish identity and values rather than seeking to comprehend the roots of this bigotry. We also explore the evolving relationship between Orthodox Judaism and Israel, noting increased military involvement and a profound attachment to the land. Furthermore, the discussion touches upon the transformative influence of the Birthright program, which brings young Jewish college students worldwide to Israel. It sheds light on how the program fosters a deeper connection to Jewish identity and community, sometimes prompting participants to immigrate and enlist in the IDF. Nonetheless, it also underscores the alarming surge in antisemitism on college campuses, juxtaposing the supportive environment in Israel with the challenges confronting Jewish students abroad. The episode traverses diverse facets of Jewish identity, community, and the intricate interplay of faith, civic duty, and diversity within Israeli society, especially amidst periods of conflict and solidarity.
