Anti-Asian Racism in the York Region District School Board with Drs. Mary Reid and Ardavan Eizadirad
28 SEP 2023 · In 2022, education researchers Drs. Mary Reid and Ardavan Eizadirad were asked to investigate stories of Ant-Asian Racism in Ontario's York Region District School Board. The report on their extensive efforts was released in May 2023.
Drs. Reid and Eizadirad join me today to talk about how this research fit within the larger context of anti-racism policy and education and how this work might be a source of inspiration for students, educators and community advocates.

Dr. Mary Reid is an Associate Professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto (OISE/UT). Her scholarship centres on the model minority myth and its detrimental impact on Asian students in math classrooms. Her work pormotes a call to action for solidarity and unity against all forms of oppression by raising awareness on how and why oppression impacts different marginalized groups in unique ways.
Dr. Ardavan Eizadirad is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education at Wilfrid Laurier University. His life experiences of attending three high schools in four years developed his passion for equity and social justice and inspired him to become an Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT).
He is also a community activist and Executive Director of the non-profit organization Youth
Association for Academics, Athletics, and Character Education (https://yaaace.com/) in the Jane and Finch community in Toronto.

It's an issue that is receiving a great deal of attention in the media, but there are many inside and outside of education who believe that solutions presented don't get to the root causes of the problem.
