Immerse yourself in the tragic tale of beautiful, spirited Deirdre, ensnared by the cunning and chauvinistic King Conachur of Ireland. As he plots to marry her after the escape of his estranged wife Maeve, Deirdres story unfolds as a captivating prequel to the legendary “The Great Tain,” often hailed as Irelands national epic. This unforgettable saga of love, betrayal, and courtly intrigue is rich with colorful characters and emotional depth, preserved through the ages in oral tradition before being immortalized in writing during the Middle Ages. With humor and insight, Stephens brings to life Deirdre’s innocence, her desperate escape from Conachur, her tragic love for her husband—murdered by the King—and her heart-wrenching demise. This Irish legend rivals the romantic tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, leaving listeners riveted by its timeless themes of passion and sorrow. (Summary by Michele Fry)
