Sometimes a place feels older than its ruins. You stand where thousands once lived, ruled, celebrated, and vanished, and for a moment the silence feels occupied. Empires Before The Fall explores that uneasy space where lost civilizations, historical mysteries, and stories of collapse leave behind questions that facts alone cannot always settle.
These stories follow empires approaching their final days, when power begins to fracture and what seemed permanent starts slipping away. Through forgotten warnings, strange accounts, and the human fears surrounding fallen kingdoms, the past becomes uncomfortably close. History may explain how an empire ended—but what if some places remember more than history can prove?

6 NOV 2026 · A single Newsweek sentence in 1975 framed cooling as settled science for millions. What happened next?
The Newsweek sentence that turned a minority view into a fact
In this episode, we walk through how a one-line claim in Newsweek and a contemporaneous National Academy of Sciences report painted two different pictures of mid-20th century climate. We trace the science, the models, the corrections, and the ways that a magazine line outpaced the peer-reviewed record - so what actually happened?
Person: J. Murray Mitchell
Date: April 28, 1975
Location: Newsweek article and National Academy of Sciences report
Topic: Mid-20th century global cooling and scientific debate
Event: Newsweek correction issued October 23, 2006
- How global average temperatures reversed from a warming trend and began a measurable multidecadal cooling around the early 1940s.
- J. Murray Mitchell compiled data by 1963 documenting that the cooling had been underway for more than twenty years.
- The 1971 Science paper by S. Ichtiaque Rasool and Stephen H. Schneider modeled aerosols and warned that a large increase could reduce sunlight enough to trigger cooling.
- Follow-up work (January 1972) under different aerosol assumptions reversed those conclusions, showing the model’s sensitivity to input choices.
- In 1975 Newsweek’s sentence presented cooling as "massive" and "widely accepted," while the National Academy of Sciences report that same year emphasized that climate prediction remained uncertain. Tired of ads? Listen to this podcast and 200+ more ad-free on OBOMEDIA.

5 NOV 2026 · A Siberian town north of the Arctic Circle hit 38°C on June 20, 2020-so what produced it?
The Verkhoyansk thermometer recorded 38°C - and models called it impossible
In this episode, we present the events and data around an unprecedented Arctic heat reading and the broader 2020 climate context. We trace the measurements, the models that flagged their improbability, and the policy and physical responses that framed the year-what does this mismatch mean for future climate risk?
Person: Verkhoyansk thermometer
Date: June 20, 2020
Temperature: 38°C (100°F)
Model probability: less than once in 80,000 years
Event context: 2020 pandemic year with temporary CO2 emission drop
- A remote Siberian town above the Arctic Circle recorded 38°C on a single June afternoon.
- Statistical models estimated such temperatures would occur less than once every 80,000 years without human-driven warming.
- 2020 saw a temporary drop in CO2 emissions due to the pandemic, yet global atmospheric CO2 concentrations rose by September.
- Oceans reached record upper-ocean heat content in 2020, absorbing roughly 90% of excess heat from greenhouse gases.
- Global policy responses to the pandemic included stimulus that directed 50% more spending to fossil-fuel-intensive sectors than to low-carbon energy. Tired of ads? Listen to this podcast and 200+ more ad-free on OBOMEDIA.

4 NOV 2026 · Venice’s 652-year command of the Mare di Venezia unravels as its fortified islands fall - how did its infrastructure fail before Napoleon arrived?
The motionless fleet shrank as Crete fell - and Venice stopped reaching east
In this episode, we trace how Venice built power through ports, islands, and fortified harbors rather than just warships, and how that infrastructure quietly eroded over centuries. We follow the transactions, sieges, and strategic logic that turned empire into vulnerability and ask how losing key nodes changed everything.
Person: Fernand Braudel
Period: 10th-18th centuries
Event: Ottoman siege and capture of Crete (ended 1669)
Date: 1797 (Napoleon's takeover of Venice)
Location: Adriatic Sea / eastern Mediterranean
- Venice called the Adriatic the Mare di Venezia and wrote the city's name across maps to reflect its dominance.
- From the 10th century Venice bought and secured ports, islands, and coastal fortresses as a network of strategic nodes.
- In 1409 Venice paid 100,000 ducats for the Dalmatian coastline, recorded as a commercial transaction rather than pure conquest.
- Crete remained under Venetian administration for nearly 450 years until a 21-year Ottoman siege concluded in 1669.
- By 1797 Venice retained little east of Kythira and Antikythera, having contracted its motionless fleet long before Napoleon arrived. Tired of ads? Listen to this podcast and 200+ more ad-free on OBOMEDIA.

2 NOV 2026 · A small explosive beneath a Mukden railway sparks a lightning-fast takeover in Manchuria. How did one night create a country?
The tiny railway charge that made Manchukuo appear on the map
In this episode, we follow the events that began with a single blast outside Mukden and trace how the Kwantung Army turned that moment into the foundation for a new state. What decisions, myths, and fast-moving actions allowed a manufactured incident to produce a capital, a government, and an emperor?
Person: Lieutenant Colonel Kanji Ishiwara; Colonel Seishiro Itagaki; Puyi
Date: September 18, 1931 (explosion); March 1, 1932 (Manchukuo declared); March 1, 1934 (Puyi becomes Emperor)
Location: Mukden (railway), Manchuria, Changchun/Xinjing
Event: Staged railway explosion leading to Kwantung Army occupation and creation of Manchukuo
- A minor bomb detonated at 10:22 PM beneath the South Manchurian Railway outside Mukden, damaging the line too little to stop service.
- Kwantung Army officers immediately blamed Chinese saboteurs and ordered troop movements into Mukden and then across Manchuria.
- Tokyo sent orders to halt the advance, but the army ignored civilian commands and consolidated control by morning.
- Within weeks the occupying force drafted a state: a Founding Conference in February 1932, a declaration of independence, and rapid institution-building.
- The army recruited Puyi from Tianjin to give the new polity a historic imperial face, elevating him to Chief Executive and later Emperor. Tired of ads? Listen to this podcast and 200+ more ad-free on OBOMEDIA.

1 NOV 2026 · A car takes a wrong turn in Sarajevo and an imperial system begins to unravel - how does a legal mechanism evaporate under its own tensions?
The car that turned wrong in Sarajevo undone an empire
In this episode, we map the structures, decisions, and moments that kept Austria-Hungary together and then let it fall apart. We trace the empire’s legal design from 1867 through annexations and diplomatic miscalculations to the wrong turn in Sarajevo - so what actually happened to make it dissolve?
Person: Emperor Franz Joseph
Date: June 28, 1914
Location: Sarajevo
Event: Dual monarchy established July 28, 1867; Franz Joseph crowned King of Hungary June 8, 1867
Topic: Annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina (administered 1878, annexed 1908)
- Desertion and armed bands called the Green Cadres occupied Croatia-Slavonia’s forests in summer 1918, carrying rifles while the state around them ceased to function.
- The Dual Monarchy created two sovereign halves with only three common institutions (foreign affairs, defence, and a finance ministry limited to funding those two).
- Hungary secured co-equal status via the 1867 Compromise (crowned June 8, laws promulgated July 28, 1867), giving Hungarians leverage to block federal solutions.
- The 1908 annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina and miscalculations by Foreign Minister Aehrenthal and Russian counterpart Izvolsky hardened Balkan and great-power polarization.
- By 1914 the empire had eleven official languages, conscripted 7.8 million soldiers, and relied on Franz Joseph’s personal permanence more than a unified political identity. Tired of ads? Listen to this podcast and 200+ more ad-free on OBOMEDIA.

31 OCT 2026 · An Army cook at Camp Funston sparks a flu outbreak, but commanders refuse quarantine-how did that decision help spread the 1918 flu?
The Army's refusal to quarantine Funston soldiers let a lethal strain travel
In this episode, we lay out the sequence of events and decisions from a rural Kansas doctor’s January warning to the March outbreak at Camp Funston, and we trace how wartime logistics may have changed a seasonal illness into something far deadlier. What choices and structures turned local cases into a global catastrophe?
Person: Albert Gitchell
Date: March 4, 1918
Location: Camp Funston, Kansas
Event: Mass outbreak without quarantine
Person: Dr. Loring Miner
- An Army cook reported a sore throat at Camp Funston; by noon 107 men had similar symptoms and 522 were sick by week’s end.
- No quarantine, no isolation orders, and troop movements continued from the military installation despite the outbreak.
- Dr. Loring Miner in Haskell County filed a warning in January about unusually severe respiratory cases that did not reach federal action.
- Soldiers funneled through camps like Funston and then to ports and Europe, creating a pathway for the illness to travel long distances.
- Wartime evacuation and transport concentrated severe cases onto trains and ships, applying selection pressures that favored more lethal viral strains. Tired of ads? Listen to this podcast and 200+ more ad-free on OBOMEDIA.

30 OCT 2026 · A king who ruled Italy sits at a Ravenna banquet with Theodoric - then a single sword stroke ends a state-building project. What happened to Odoacer?
The sword stroke at the banquet that ended seventeen years of state-building
In this episode, we follow the nineteen-year arc from Odoacer's seizure of power to the Ravenna banquet where Theodoric struck, tracing the administrative choices, coinage, and senatorial alliances that defined his rule. What decisions and alliances built a functioning regime - and which one move unmade it?
Person: Odoacer
Date: 15 March 493 (banquet in Ravenna)
Location: Ravenna
Topic: Seventeen years of state-building and one fatal banquet strike
Event: Peace treaty and subsequent killing at a banquet
- Odoacer rose from federate soldier to ruler after his troops proclaimed him king in August 476 and he deposed Romulus Augustulus.
- Instead of claiming the imperial purple, Odoacer sent the regalia to Emperor Zeno, while expanding control by securing Sicily and absorbing Dalmatia.
- He deliberately restored and empowered the Roman Senate, elevating aristocrats like Boethius and Symmachus to high office.
- Odoacer issued copper coinage marked S.C. (Senatus Consulto), reviving a third-century Roman practice that influenced later monetary reform.
- Despite seventeen years of administrative continuity and surviving chancery records, one chronicled sword stroke at a Ravenna banquet abruptly halted his project. Tired of ads? Listen to this podcast and 200+ more ad-free on OBOMEDIA.

29 OCT 2026 · A two-kilometre blind spot in the ocean swallowed humanity’s excess heat; instruments left the deep unreadable. What was hiding two kilometres down?
The two-kilometre blind spot that hid ninety percent of the heat
In this episode, we lay out how scientists measured atmosphere, land and ice yet found less than ten percent of the heat humans added to the Earth system, and how the missing ninety percent was stored in the ocean. We follow the measurement challenges, the ocean’s layered physics, and the steps that led researchers to confront a vast, hidden heat reservoir - what questions did that reveal?
Person: human civilization (heat source)
Period: 1971-2018 (initial anomaly)
Location: ocean (primarily below 700 metres)
Event: deployment of thousands of autonomous instruments
Topic: ocean heat content and measurement gaps
- Early measurement networks sampled surface and coastal zones but left vast ocean regions and depths sparsely observed.
- Natural variability-El Niño, La Niña, volcanic cooling-masked long-term heat accumulation in sparse time series.
- The ocean’s layered structure concentrated heat into the thermocline and deep ocean, where mixing is slow and residence times are long.
- By 2020 roughly one third of added ocean heat had penetrated below 700 metres, following well-known circulation and mixing processes.
- Solving the blind spot required scaling autonomous observations to thousands of floats and a new approach to mapping heat in the upper two thousand metres. Tired of ads? Listen to this podcast and 200+ more ad-free on OBOMEDIA.

28 OCT 2026 · A missing ruler's name on every coin and a single three-line epitaph-what actually happened in those chaotic years of early Islam?
The coins refused to name a ruler - and histories filled the gap
In this episode, we present the surviving pieces of a vanished administrative world and trace how gaps in contemporary evidence left later historians to assemble a narrative. We ask how absence-of names on coins, of inscriptions, of contemporary records-shaped the story of the first four caliphs and the Rashidun state's rise.
Person: Zuhayr
Date: 644 CE (inscription year)
Event: Rashidun Caliphate expansion across Byzantine and Sassanid territories
Topic: absence of rulers' names on contemporary coins and inscriptions
Period: 7th century, thirty-year Rashidun era
- A three-line stone epitaph carved by Zuhayr in 644 records a death without title or imperial names.
- No confirmed coin, seal, or inscription from the Rashidun era names Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, or Ali.
- Contemporary coinage instead bears four Arabic words-“In the name of God”-omitting any ruler identification.
- The Rashidun armies advanced through regions exhausted by decades of Byzantine-Sassanid war and plague, encountering depleted treasuries and armies.
- Major administrative claims (e.g., Umar’s Diwan and pension lists) are first documented in chronicles written centuries later. Tired of ads? Listen to this podcast and 200+ more ad-free on OBOMEDIA.
