In September, 1939, Britain declared war on Germany. With the intention of breaking the morale of the British people, Hitler decided to begin bombing Britain’s major cities, thus forcing Churchill to negotiate. The campaign, however, had the reverse effect, bringing the people together to face a common enemy.
The evacuation of Britain, at the beginning of World War II, often referred to as “Operation Pied Piper”, saw the displacement of 1.5 million children, pregnant women and vulnerable people, two thirds of which came from London. “Evacuees” is the story of one such family.

30 NOV 2021 · In this, the third and final part of “Evacuees” the children have to leave their temporary home at Bletchingdon Park after the death of their benefactor, Sir Abe Bailey. They are billeted to a lady in the village.
Now I would stress that the vast majority of people who took in evacuee children were kind, loving people with a heart of gold. However, there were some, just a few who were, shall we say, not so kind, and our children were unfortunate to be billeted with one such as that.
All ends well though, and the children eventually return to London to be reunited with their parents.
12 NOV 2021 · The children have left London and are taken to Bletchingdon, in Oxfordshire. This second installment of “Evacuees” deals with their arrival, their billeting at the “Big House”, settling in and letters to home. Mum and baby Georgie have also been evacuated at this point, but to Bridgewater in Somerset, over 100 miles away in the opposite direction...
29 OCT 2021 · It is the summer of 1939 in Canning Town, East London. Rumours of war are rife in the close-knit community. Wally and Edie Gletherow are concerned for the safety of their family if war breaks out. The government makes a plan to evacuate all the children from the city to the outlying counties.
