21 AUG 2026 · In this episode of Fish Finder Literacy, Zara guides first-time bass anglers through the core skills needed to read clear 2D sonar arches without getting lost in advanced features or tournament talk. Many new buyers face the same frustration when screens show lines and colors that could be fish, thermoclines, or transducer noise, often leading to unnecessary upgrades. The solution lies in understanding how sound returns from fish and why transducer angle shapes those returns.
This episode delivers three practical on-water checks you can run immediately: testing transducer tilt for a naturally curved bottom at idle, switching to manual 2D mode with mid-level sensitivity to spot true arches versus partial returns, and isolating cables to eliminate engine interference. These steps reveal exactly what your unit can deliver before spending more.
Key takeaways:
- Set transducer parallel to water and fine-tune angle until bottom returns curve naturally
- Run manual 2D sensitivity tests at varying speeds to lock in consistent arch shapes
- Move power cables away from transducer wiring to keep signals clean

11 JUL 2026 · In this episode of Fish Finder Literacy, Zara breaks down the essentials of setting up your first electronics without tournament-level jargon. Learn why transducer placement makes or breaks early results, how to interpret confusing arches on the screen, and the hidden costs of brand lock-in that can limit future upgrades. From simple mounting tweaks and angle adjustments to reading fish marks versus structure, this guide helps new users avoid common pitfalls like poor data at speed or draining batteries on multi-species boats. Practical steps cover testing mounts in the driveway, securing cables, checking connector types, and keeping menus straightforward so you can focus on fishing instead of frustration.
Key takeaways:
- Adjust transducer angle a few degrees for level hull alignment and recheck after vibration loosens screws.
- Read arches by shape and depth to identify fish size versus bait or cover.
- Choose brands by connector type and power draw to avoid future lock-in and extra costs.
- Test units on temporary mounts before permanent drilling and wipe transducers regularly.
