24 MAR 2025 · In this episode of the FiveByFive Aviation Podcast, we sit down with Kyle Preston, Vice President of Del Sol Aviation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Kyle shares the inspiring story of how he transitioned from the U.S. Navy to aviation, what led him to start a flight school with his father in 2008, and how they navigated economic challenges to grow into a 15-aircraft operation. We dive into the importance of standardization, proactive maintenance, and delivering a top-tier training experience for students from across the country. Tune in to hear insights on running a successful flight school and why a strong maintenance philosophy can be a game-changer.
We discuss how Del Sol has trained over 200 CFIs with a remarkable 100% first-time pass rate on the CFI check ride—an achievement that has earned recognition from the FAA.
We also dive into the job market for pilots, discussing industry hiring trends and how Del Sol’s partnerships with major recruiters—including GoJet Airlines, PlaneSense, Advanced Air, Republic Airways, Mesa Airlines, Sierra West Airlines, and Ameriflight—provide students with direct pathways to employment. Kyle emphasizes the importance of mock interviews and early career planning, ensuring graduates are fully prepared for the competitive aviation job market.
Finally, Kyle leaves us with Del Sol Aviation’s unique motto: “We love quitters.” Tune in to hear why Del Sol celebrates when their CFIs move on to bigger opportunities in the industry—and how their alumni network continues to grow, proudly displayed on their Wall of Graduates.
