Get Out of Your Own Way with April Yee: And get what you want through transformative self-care

  • Presence Stealer

4 JUL 2024 · In this episode, I share the concept that it’s not better over there than it is right here. What does that mean? When we’re focused on achieving our goals and we think that once we achieve them, our life will be better, we may be in for a surprise. Things will be different, not necessarily better. Life will still be 50/50 - yes, certain things may be “better” and other problems may arise that haven’t been there before achieving the goal. When we familiarize ourselves with this concept, we can find out that being right here, right now is just as important as getting “over there” is. When we can do this, we stay present in our lives with what is, rather than trying to escape what is because it’s not the “ideal version” we have in our minds. It doesn't get better than this!   “Being aware of the present moment simply means you never believe the illusion that the future is going to be better than what is going on right now.” - Mateo Tabatabai, The Mind-Made Prison   “If you can’t learn to be happy now, with the life you’ve got, what makes you think you’ll understand how to be happy with the life you think you want?” - Hal Elrod, The Miracle Morning

  • When You Try to Feel Happy All the Time

20 JUN 2024 · In this episode, I talk about the concept that life is 50/50 - 50% positive emotions, 50% negative emotions - and what happens when we try to deny the 50% that is negative. When we don’t know or understand that our lives are 50/50, when we’re experiencing the 50% negative aspects, we think something terribly wrong is happening. But if that 50% is part of our lives, we’re just experiencing THAT part of our lives. Nothing has gone wrong. However, when we don’t know that, we buffer to avoid the negative 50% and suffer the net negative consequences of that buffering. We’ll look at how to break away from our buffering actions and false pleasures to obtain true well-being and presence.    Watch April Yee livestream

  • How to Feel Better

6 JUN 2024 · In this episode, I talk about why emotions are important in our lives and how we’ve been taught to deal with them in unhelpful ways. We look at what we usually do with emotions and I share a more beneficial way to be with and look at our emotions.  Some things you’ll hear about: - All of our emotions, including happiness, are created in our minds. - How to identify how you actually want to feel. - Whatever it is you want in your life, it’s because you believe you will feel better having it. - How you decide to think about something determines how you feel about something. • Why You Keep Sabotaging Yourself

16 MAY 2024 · In this episode, I talk about the Motivational Triad and how the primitive part of our brains have evolved to survive. The Motivational Triad was helpful for survival, but not helpful when we want to create healthier habits, start a new venture, find a romantic partner, or do anything new. The primitive part of our brain wants to keep us safe, and this safety can become self-sabotage when we’re trying to do new or challenging things in our lives. We’ll look at how we get in our own way because of the Motivational Triad AND how to get out of our own way by redefining the Motivational Triad and using our prefrontal cortex.   Watch April Yee livestream here

  • How You're Getting in Your Own Way

2 MAY 2024 · In this episode, I share a self-awareness tool called The Model. Do you wonder why you try to take certain actions, but don’t end up doing them? There’s a thought that’s getting in the way. We’ll talk about the five components of The Model and how they apply to our lives. We’ll see that we’re creating the results we’re currently getting in our lives. If we don’t like the current results we have, we can use The Model to create new results that we DO want. It’s a powerful tool to have to get out of your own way!   Watch April Yee Livestream Here

  • What is Transformative Self-Care?

18 APR 2024 · In this episode, I talk about the three pillars of transformative self-care. The word “self-care” has been co-opted and thrown about somewhat recklessly lately. I’ve heard commercials that talk about how getting a sugar-filled frothy drink is self-care. And it CAN be if you’re not worried about sugar intake or weight struggles. But for most people, a sugar-filled frothy drink likely doesn’t align with their ideal care practices. So what is transformative self-care? The first pillar is how we think about ourselves. The second pillar is how we speak to and about ourselves. The third pillar is how we treat ourselves. These all work together to form our relationship with ourselves and can help us get out of our own way.

  • The Universe Realigned My Life

4 APR 2024 · In this episode, I share about the traumatic emergency open-heart surgery I underwent that saved and transformed my life. I talk about who I was before the surgery and how I got in my own way by trying to hustle and DO to prove my worth and value to others. Ultimately, that contributed to the health emergency I experienced. I share about who I became through recovery from the emergency surgery and the need for therapy because of the identity loss I incurred. Through my work in therapy, I discovered how to get out of my own way through three foundational lessons that I learned. I eventually became a holistic life coach to support others in their journeys, and in this show I’ll share what I learned along the way to support YOU in your own journey to get out of your own way.   Watch April Yee Livestream Here

What does getting in your own way look like? Here are a few ways I’ve gotten in my own way: - Hustling for worthiness - Letting other people define my value and worth - Ignoring my body by not taking care of myself - Lying to myself and others, aka people-pleasing - Thinking I wasn’t good enough. Here are a few things I’ve practiced to get out of my own way: - Asking myself “What brings me joy?” and honoring the answers - Being okay with me - nothing is wrong with me and my life - Connecting with my body, listening to it, honoring it - Telling the truth to myself, then to others if I want to - Loving myself no matter what - Practice, practice, practice. At the end of each episode, I present new questions for you to engage with. Answering the questions helps you gain insight and clarity for yourself. You’ll hear new perspectives on self-care and how you can feel empowered by caring for yourself. Through small acts of kindness to yourself, you can strengthen your relationship with yourself. I talk about self-care and self-care practices in a deep and meaningful way, and offer transformative, expanded possibilities for how you can view yourself and your life, for how you can show up for yourself and your life. If you don’t yet, you’ll start to believe that you are worthy, valuable, and good enough. You’ll be able to see how you’ve gotten in your own way, how to get out of your own way, and how to create what you want. You’ll start making more aligned decisions, which will affect your whole life. It’s about even more self-love and self-acceptance and how we get there.
