5 MAY 2021 · Rukban is an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp in the desert of Syria on the border with Iraq and Jordan. The Camp is a home to 10,000 civilians, nearly half of whom are children, orphans who have nowhere else to go after having fled to other regions in Syria that are controlled by the regime of Bashar al-Assad and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The Assad regime blocks aid deliveries to the Camp. This episode explains to plight of the people in Rukban who starve without food, healthcare, or sewage. The Syrian Emergency Task Force (SETF) is the only organization providing food, medicine, and relief to those suffering in Rukban. During the early months of the Biden Administration, this episode gives listeners the occasion to focus on the plight of the Syrian people in the Camp and in Idlib Province, as we explore with SETF Executive Director Mouaz Moustafa the priorities in the country ten years after the start of violence there.

1 MAR 2021 · The Wisdom House is a school for orphans in war-torn Idlib Province, Syria. In 2016, the Syrian Emergency Task Force identified five teachers, who teach over 100 students, and connected these pioneering women to American communities, who support their commitment to the children. The Wisdom House continues to foster lasting friendships between the teachers and students from the Kindergarten and communities around the globe, as they exchange letters and messages of Hope. In this podcast, we hear directly from The Wisdom House teachers in Syria: Ms Moumena, Principal and English teacher, and her colleagues, Ms Khansa and Ms Fatima.

In this episode, Omar Alshogre and Mouaz Moustafa speak to how they think that the globe can get involved in this issue; as well as, the importance of paying attention to and getting educated about what is going on in our world. This episode brings up themes of holding those in positions of power and ourselves accountable in this increasingly interconnected world where everyone can have an important role to play.

This is the first episode in the series Global Connections: Syrian Hidden Voices. Omar Alshogre, a Syrian activist and the Director of Detainee Affairs for the Syrian Emergency Task Force shares with us his experiences during the beginning of the Syrian Revolution. Mouaz Moustafa, a founding member and the current Executive Director of the SETF then shares with us the beginnings of the SETF and how their work and goals have evolved and how each and everyone one of us can get involved.
