26 AUG 2026 · In this episode of Home Battery Backup, Zara guides solar owners through the tricky choice of prioritizing home battery functions when backup power, time-of-use bill savings, and solar self-consumption rarely align perfectly. She explains how to gather three key numbers first—outages over twelve months, exact peak rate windows from utility statements, and daily solar export amounts—before adjusting any settings. The episode breaks down the trade-offs of each path, from reserving capacity for long outages to charging off-peak and discharging during high-rate periods, or storing excess rooftop generation instead of exporting it. List your must-run appliances and their wattage needs, compare backup targets against your rate schedule, and test a conservative 30% reserve split on the rest for one cycle to track real savings and reliability. Review priorities each season as production and loads shift.
Key takeaways:
- Track outages, peaks, and exports to weigh goals
- Start with a 30% backup reserve and adjust based on results
- Reassess settings seasonally for optimal performance

19 AUG 2026 · In this episode of Home Battery Backup, Zara explores why most home battery systems struggle to deliver both reliable outage protection and daily time-of-use rate savings. She breaks down the practical steps to audit your critical-load panel, calculate real wattage needs, and account for standby losses that quietly drain capacity. Learn how to set a clear energy reserve for multi-hour outages while testing small load shifts to capture off-peak pricing. The discussion highlights common pitfalls like inverter limits and seasonal rate changes, plus simple adjustments that free up hundreds of watt-hours without new hardware.
Key takeaways:
- Inventory circuits and compare outage load against battery capacity
- Subtract standby inverter draw before planning arbitrage
- Reserve power for essentials first, then shift high-draw appliances
- Verify continuous inverter rating against summed critical loads
- Update reserves when utility peak windows change seasonally

11 JUL 2026 · In this episode of Home Battery Backup, Zara breaks down the essential decision framework for choosing a home battery system based on real needs rather than hype. Homeowners with solar often face outages that still disrupt essentials while peak utility rates inflate bills. Batteries can address three distinct goals—backup loads for outages, time-of-use arbitrage to shift cheap energy to expensive periods, and solar pairing to store excess generation—but no single setup optimizes all three simultaneously. Learn how to rank priorities by reviewing outage history, utility rate spreads, and solar export data, then measure circuits and schedules to size capacity effectively. This practical approach focuses on cost, reliability, and your household's unique balance.
Key takeaways:
- Prioritize backup loads if outages exceed 20 hours yearly; separate critical circuits for efficiency.
- Model TOU arbitrage when rate spreads exceed 15 cents/kWh by aligning charge/discharge windows.
- Capture solar exports over 30% with storage to reduce grid reliance without perfect timing.
