12 SEP 2024 · The trial for a Nebraska man accused of killing four of his neighbors in the village of Laurel got underway in Dakota County Thursday. Defendant Jason Jones did not appear in court. Prosecuting attorney Corey O’Brien said the state has plans to show the jury more than 1,000 pieces of evidence, including photos, videos and physical objects incriminating Jones. Defense attorney Matthew McDonald said Jones had a mental breakdown the night of the homicides and therefore should not be charged with first-degree, pre-meditated murder. The trial is expected to continue over the next few weeks.

9 SEP 2024 · In August 2022, Jason Jones was arrested in connection with the deaths of four of his neighbors in Laurel, a northeast Nebraska town of 900 people. Jones is facing multiple charges of first-degree murder, first-degree arson, and the use of a firearm to commit a felony. If found guilty, Jones could face the death penalty. The trial is expected to last several weeks.
3 SEP 2024 · U.S. Senate candidates Republican Senator Deb Fischer and independent Dan Osborn announced endorsements from labor groups Tuesday. Fischer touted endorsements from 13 labor unions and trade associations, which include the Nebraska Farmers Union, Nebraska Hospital Association and the State Troopers Association of Nebraska. Meanwhile, Osborn announced support from 23 labor unions, including the Nebraska AFL-CIO, United Auto Workers and Communications Workers of America.
3 SEP 2024 · A parenting group for Spanish-speakers will continue its pilot program in Fremont starting today (Tuesday).
30 AUG 2024 · North Omaha community leaders say a housing plan from presidential hopeful Kamala Harris would help develop more affordable housing in the neighborhood. State Sen. Terrell McKinney, Omaha developer Don Curry and housing advocate Kimara Snipes endorsed Harris’ plan to build 3 million new homes in the next four years and provide down payment assistance to first time home buyers. The Harris plan would also provide tax incentives to builders constructing starter homes.
29 AUG 2024 · The University of Nebraska campuses in Omaha and Lincoln are dissolving offices focused on diversity. Students on both campuses are concerned with the closures.
27 AUG 2024 · The Madison County History Museum houses oddities of the county’s history from floor to ceiling. And one volunteer is known to be its walking encyclopedia. Stories of the county’s history aren't the only reason people visit.
27 AUG 2024 · Sen. Pete Ricketts hosted a forum at the Nebraska State Fair on Monday. Alongside Congressman Adrian Smith and other state and federal agribusiness leaders, the group focused on agriculture, trade and government regulations. Ricketts said government overregulation from the Biden administration is hurting Nebraska agriculture producers and he encouraged the audience of around 100 people to educate federal bureaucrats about the agriculture industry.
23 AUG 2024 · Minnesota Governor and Democratic Vice-Presidential Nominee Tim Walz spent the first half of his life in Nebraska, where he says he learned the value of hard work. While Walz was in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention, Nebraska Public Media’s Brian Beach visited the places Walz once called home.
