21 AUG 2026 · In this episode of Kinship Care, we break down the critical first steps for relatives raising a child, focusing on choosing between guardianship and custody to unlock benefits like TANF without costly delays. Learn how mismatched legal arrangements can block monthly support, why school enrollment often requires a certified court order, and the licensing process that qualifies you for full foster care rates instead of lower payments. Discover practical tips for gathering birth records, proof of relationship, and tracking every submission with a simple log to avoid repeated office visits.
Key takeaways:
- Match your legal path to daily needs before filing to preserve access to state benefits
- Bring notarized affidavits or court orders for smooth school registration and record transfers
- Request the latest licensing checklist from your regional specialist, including any kinship waivers
- Maintain paper and digital copies of all documents to resolve issues quickly
These upfront efforts ensure support payments arrive on time and reduce bureaucratic hurdles. 📩 Have questions or want to share your experience? Reach out at kinship@senseofthisshit.com.
