18 MAR 2025 · ML and Marc broadcast from the Cadieux Cafe on St. Patrick's Day, and ML learns why Marc hates doing remotes.
STRAIGHT DOPE: After overcoming yet another technical nightmare while trying to broadcast outside the friendly confines of Red Shovel Network HQ, ML looks back on the 5th anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic and wonders whether we've learned anything? Marc offers his answer. What's yours?
The Cadieux Cafe was preparing to host the show's first-ever roadshow in 2020 when ML stopped by on a Friday night to see whether folks would be able to social distance at the intimate Eastside establishment. While a Rush cover band rocked on, and a drunken patron covered him in spittle, ML began to have doubts. But what happened a few days later resolved all of his concerns. Listen and learn what historic event let the Soul of Detroit crew off the hook.
Here's an old story: Instead of celebrating their Big Ten Tournament victory, Wolverine fans are complaining that they got jobbed with their seeding for March Madness Marc questions whether ML's X post about the so-called Big Brother was sincere. Marc also thows shade on ML's contention that losing in the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament may be the best thing to help his Spartans go on a deep tournament run.
Before he was James Bond, Sean Connery starred in this Irish folktale produced by Disney. Can you name it?
We know, we know; you've heard it before. But we've worked out a plan to get Erika Erickson back on the show regularly. Tune in to find out more!
ML tells some stories of his time as an assistant warden at the youth hostel in Killarney, Ireland, and how he used to torture obnoxious guests by playing SubPop artist The Dwarves at high volume.
If you missed us on St. Patrick's Day, come out on Friday Aug. 1 for Soul Night at the Cadieux. We'll have live music, VIP events for members of the Soulmates and great music by Shashta Fox and The Kings English.

GEEK OF THE WEEK: An influencer who messes with a baby wombat is this week's absolutely selfish, rotten, horrible ... geek.
ROOM 7609: The Waterboys "Fishermans Blues" was in heavy rotation when ML deejayed at the youth hostel, so he books them into the New Wave suite for St. Patrick's Day. Send us your song -- with great story attached -- at mlsoulofdetroit@gmail.com
SOULMATE UPDATE: Will you please be our Soulmate? You may get a chance to ride on a pedal pub with us this summer, and you’ll definitely get to be one of our VIPS when we host Soul Night at the Cadieux Café on Friday, Aug. 1, featuring Shasta Fox and The King’s English!
FEEDBACK: ML picks a fight with another Spartan who feels Spartans are too belligerent, a listener wants to know about Detroit rent rates, we debate when politicians should check their ambition, and ML laments who people who disagree with someone always try to make it political. And he asks two questions: Which word never appears in the novel "The Godfather," and which word never appears in his latest column? 11 MAR 2025 · Legend Eli Zaret zooms in with some classic baseball stories and hot takes from sunny Florida, while Marc continues to fight a virulent virus and Shawn finally ends his quest for T.P.
STRAIGHT DOPE: Come join us in person on Monday, March 17 for our annual St. Patrick's Day show at the Cadieux Café, where we’ll be recording live from noon to 2 p.m.
Eli takes us back 50 years to tell a tale of spring training when the Tigers were at their nadir. He says he’ll never forget what a recumbent Gates Brown told him while the rest of the Home 9 hustled to get ready for the season. Listen and learn – and we guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
ML, Marc and Eli reminisce about the phenom who followed that awful 1975 squad during Detroit’s bicentennial: Mark “The Bird” Fydrich. Eli fondly reflects on the simple farm boy from Massachusetts, and how the cheapskate Tigers never gave him his due. Which is why he bought the dump truck that would play a key role in his untimely demise.
Tiger Stadium was a ballpark like no other, with fans close to the field and foul territory so narrow pitchers needed protection as they warmed up. ML is still wondering why they didn’t want any pepper on the field, though. If you can help him, drop us a line at mailto:mlsoulofdetroit@gmail.com.
Eli trots out a couple old MSU burns when ML asks him to opine on the latest chapter on the ever-roiling rivalry between THE university of Michigan and the University of Michigan. Meanwhile, Marc wonders what all the fuss is about.
ML tells a tale of some children who know how to handle the rivalry. Hear all about it. And heed their example!
Shawn makes the scene and asks Eli if he sees any parallels between former Pistons GM Troy Weaver and current Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman. Eli weighs in on the fate of two franchises who are rebuilding, and why one is doing so much better than the other.
Sideburns, chaw and Bob Sykes. If you are a long-time Tiger fan, you know exactly what ML is talking about when he asks Eli whether he had better muttonchops than a long-forgotten Tiger hurler.
With just 30 seconds left before Eli has to hit the links, ML asks him to share his thoughts on Donald Trump and Eli Musk. Can the consummate TV newsman fit it all in before the break? You’ll have to listen to find out.

GEEK OF THE WEEK: Mel Gibson says he deserves … a lot of things. A lawyer’s refusal to help him get one of them leads to her downfall. And provides us some geeks of the week.
ROOM 7609: International conflict inspires listener Todd to suggest a band that even Shawn likes: Echo and the Bunnymen, performing “The Puppet.” Marc caps it off with an epic drop. Send us your favorite tune or deep cut or track from an obscure band – along with a story about the ditty – by writing to mailto:mlsoulofdetroit@gmail.com.

7 MAR 2025 · We're revisiting a show from October. Erika Erickson is back and we’re talking with Tigers broadcaster Andy Dirks… while Shawn is cleaning his dirty drawers in Cleveland.
STRAIGHT DOPE: Fresh off his appearance on the Rachel Maddow Show, ML starts the podcast with a tribute to his favorite host of the Carlos & Shawn podcast … Mr. Monarrez.
Former Tiger Andy Dirks, who provides color commentary, zooms in to talk about the Detroit Tigers amazing season.
Andy breaks down the managerial genius of AJ Hinch, whose ability to put players in a position to succeed prompts ML to reveal the similarities between the Tigers skipper and his leadership of the Detroit Free Press recreational co-ed Wednesday night Belle Isle softball team. Andy politely pretends to take a call in the middle of ML’s incisive analysis.
Erika says it seems like the young Tigers are having a lot of fun and defying expectations. Andy offers his insights.
Andy contrasts the 2011-2014 Tigers he played on with the current squad. He said his Tigers were starter-heavy, with horses like Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer in the starting rotation. The current Tigers have only one horse: Tarik Skubal.
How do you hit a 100-mph fastball? Andy discusses batting strategy and how pinch hitters prepare to face flamethrowers. ML – again – sees parallels between how he helps the members of his softball team prepare to face pitchers … hurling 10-mph pitches.
https://www.freep.com/story/news/columnists/ml-elrick/2024/10/06/mike-rogers-home-address-registered-vote-senate-candidate/75492132007/
Shawn dials in to discuss why he skipped dinner with Jennifer Hammond to wash his drawers in a Cleveland laundromat.
Teen trolls stop Shawn on the street in Houston. ML says he’s pretty sure his cousin Jeffrey was not involved, but he can’t guarantee it.

25 FEB 2025 · Devin Scillian is retired so he has nothing better to do than write for the Free Press and hang out with ML and Marc at Red Shovel Network HQ ... while Shawn looks for toilet paper in somebody else’s crib.
STRAIGHT DOPE: ML welcomes fellow Local 4 (WDIV-TV) legend Devin Scillian to the show. When Marc questions why ML considers himself a Channel 4 icon, he gets a surprise answer that actually kinda makes sense.
Devin is a good sport, but may have some explaining to do when he gets home after he laughed at Marc’s latest outstanding intro.
Devin explains how journalism became his siren, which also helps explain why he aspired to be Homer – and not the one you’re probably thinking of.
What is a good friend; the one who tells you to zip up, or the one who lets you walk around with your crank hanging out? https://www.freep.com/story/opinion/contributors/2025/02/24/trump-allegiance-january-6-bitcoin-crypto/78631905007/
Reporters – and anchors – are supposed to be objective. And Devin has only expressed strong opinions on topics like transparency and freedom of information. But he says some Free Press readers have reacted strongly to his column. Listen and learn why.
Devin offers two critiques of President Trump, but also criticizes another Republican and a Democratic president. Find out who he singled out -- and what he thinks they got wrong.
ML takes a cheap shot at weather forecasters, and Devin offers a startling observation about how and where they work.
Would you rather have praise or criticism? Devin and ML make their case for why our critics may actually be kinder than the folks who pay us compliments.
Should newspapers continue to endorse candidates? Devin, the TV guy, says yes. ML, the newspaper guy, says no. And shares how his take on this topic got him in trouble with some colleagues and his boss.
http://www.devinscillian.com ... but don't expect any news about Devin and ML busking in Paris any time soon.

18 FEB 2025 · Shawn is running a little behind and has trouble wiping away his embarrassment before joining ML and Marc for a show that ML hopes you are not listening to at work … and that he prays his mother never hears (because he was reared better).
STRAIGHT DOPE: As you know, Shawn is very modest, and would never brag about his accomplishments. Still, ML and Marc were surprised to hear him hobble around the studio declaring: “I’m Number Two!”
Drew is a gracious host, welcoming podcasters and strangers alike into his basement every week. So why is Shawn so critical of our host? Have a seat and hear how Shawn’s rear has him up in arms.
Obtusely, Shawn changes the subject from his very human needs to the tragic death of two children who froze to death in a van parked in Detroit. The crew questions how this horrible tragedy happened, and who might be responsible.
Would our quality of life be better if Canada was the 51st state? A vigorous debate ensues.
Show etiquette is not among Shawn’s many gifts, as he demonstrates once again. ML can’t believe what he’s hearing as Marc shits the bed – which ML wishes was just a metaphor.
Marc’s digestive disaster in Prague nearly 20 years ago reminds ML of the time an East Berliner and the most handsome man in Austria rescued him from a potential tragic end at jazz club in Prague nearly 40 years ago. (Unlike Marc, ML kept his pants on.)
Somehow, the conversation turns to stroking ferrets, the Big Lebowski, why ML wanted to visit Yugoslavia as it disintegrated into civil war and more tales of international derring-do. Listen and learn and try to forget everything that happened before this point on the show!

11 FEB 2025 · An ambassador who wants to lead the Michigan Republican Party joins ML and Marc to talk about his plans for his party ... as well as his visit to Bird Shit Island.
STRAIGHT DOPE: Joe Cella was a Donald Trump skeptic in 2015 who became such a convert that Trump named him ambassador to Fiji in 2016. ML asks him to explain how he came full circle on the president, and whether the race to become chairman of the Michigan Republican Party will come down to who is the “Trumpiest.”
Cella’s rivals for the MIGOP post are Meshawn Maddock and state Sen. Jim Runestad. ML invited both of them to come on the show and discuss their candidacies, but Meshawn did not respond and Runestad could not make time on his schedule because he expected to be in session.
ML asks Joe whether Joe Biden won the 2020 election. Listen to hear the ambassador’s answer and decide for yourself whether it was diplomatic … or a dodge.
Blackwater private security firm Erik Prince is a polarizing figure, but to Joe, he was just a classmate at Hillsdale College -- but a classmate like no other. Joe tells why Prince, the brother of former U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, stood out on campus.
Asked to point out the shortcomings of his opponents, Joe instead offers a detailed explanation for why he is the best candidate to lead the state Republican Party. He says his qualifications include media skills, resourcefulness … and the ability to raise a lot of dough. Listen and find out where he plans to get the loot.
Marc ribs Joe about his appointment as ambassador to Fiji, which Marc points out may not be the most glamorous posting in the world. Joe responds with aplomb.
ML asks Joe how he'll handle Mike Duggan and whether the independent gubernatorial candidate will draw votes from Republicans as well as Democrats. Hear Joe's thoughtful response.
ML asks Joe about Nauru, known as Bird Shit Island, and Joe shares a tale about his visit and how his research into a downed Mitchell B-25 bomber led him back to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Shawn joins the crew to talk about the Lions, while ML shares his astonishment at the number of people who came out to see the Spartan women’s basketball team last weekend.
ML’s mentor Gerry Shields checks in via text from Philly with a hilarious story about a shooting during the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory. (Yeah, we know stories about shootings aren’t funny, but this one is the exception!)

4 FEB 2025 · Yacht rock gets a whole lotta love when two local musicians drop in to hype their upcoming gig before the world premiere of a new music video in Room 7609.
STRAIGHT DOPE: TRIGGER WARNING: ML compares one of the commercials on Sirius XM's POTUS channel with an inappropriate headline he saw in The Onion during the Clinton Administration.
Marc's intro suggests Shawn is a devil worshipper. Shawn says he isn't ... he just used to hang out with one.
ML gets the show off to a manic start, with jokes about Vivek Ramaswamy's new album. (It's not as bad as it sounds -- ML's jokes, not Vivek's album.)
Who are the best feuding brother bands? Marc likes the Black Crowes, guests Brian Robillard of the Common Scolds and Max Prokop of The Kings English and Shasta Fox put in a good word for Oasis. Shawn offers some love to Van Halen. And ML casts his lot with The Kinks. Tell us about your favorite with an email to https://gmail.com
https://www.thenewdodgelounge.com/events/6772bgbwzlnjdsb-lch3s-9mb9t-adr4f-tt9xk-kxglf-n7g9a-24fdb-6kcde-a73d5-sw9y4-fdmwp-jzpx9-ax2rb-by54h-yp4ge-rlkwn-wlmg9-s6rf8-7t38p-ls79l
Max loves vinyl while ML complains that he doesn't like to get up every 22 minutes to flip the record. But almost everyone in the gang finds something to love about the near-defunct format that is making a comeback.
As a boy, ML was moved to tears by the cover of Queen's "News of the World." But even though he spent a lot of time contemplating the album art, he got a whole bunch wrong about the boys in the band. Listen, learn and laugh!
It's OK; you can admit you love Yacht Rock. Even Shawn won't make fun of you! Still, ML is reluctant to embrace the genre that makes him think about frat boys and bucket hats.
The gang raves about OJ Simpson documentaries and tells ML he doesn't know what he's missing. He says he doesn't have time for such foolishness and is instead spending all of his viewing time watching James Marsden star vehicles.
This is not a misprint: Christopher Cross, maybe the softest songwriter of the 70s and 80s, once filled in for guitar hero Ritchie Blackmore when he couldn't make a gig with Deep Purple. Hear all about it in the new episode.

28 JAN 2025 · The lead prosecutor in the Kwame Kilpatrick public corruption trial schools ML, Marc and Shawn on the pardon process – and how Biden and Trump have exercised their “divine right of kings.”
STRAIGHT DOPE: Mark Chutkow zooms in to educate ML, Marc and Shawn on how the pardon process is SUPPOSED to work, which is news we can all use, because Joe Biden and Donald Trump sure seem to be doing everything they can to pervert one of the greatest powers the president possesses.
Marc asks Mark about pre-emptive pardons, and Mark reveals the most famous pre-emptive pardon you’ve ever heard of without realizing it. Listen and learn.
Why do presidents get to pardon people? Mark says the English are to blame, prompting ML to curse the 810-year-old Magna Carta.
Biden and Trump each pardoned a thousand people at a time. Mark explains that the pardon process is actually a very deliberate and thoughtful process that is designed to keep presidents for setting someone free who doesn’t deserve a break.
Every pardon request should be evaluated using the same criteria, including whether the person seeking the pardon has accepted responsibility. Oh, and there’s also supposed to be a five-year “cooling off” period. Find out what other factors are SUPPOSED to determine whether a con should get a break.
Was the pardon process followed in the Kwame Kilpatrick case?
Do you the difference between a commutation and a pardon? Mark does. And he explains.
Listen and learn why a conviction doesn't always tell you everything you need to know about how bad a dude may be.
Can the president pardon himself? Can the president use a pardon to erase an impeachment? Mark has more answers.
Shawn gaps, but then perks up and asks ML how he spells a very naughty term.
Marc’s kids learn daddy uses some bad words, too, by peeking at his wife’s cell phone, prompting Marc to seek parenting advice.
What is your favorite cheap beer? Shawn, Marc and ML offer their sudsy selections.

21 JAN 2025 · Shawn says he saw Dan Campbell weep after the Commanders mastered the Lions, which didn’t bother ML, who considered cursing them after they messed up his charity hockey game. Marc is appalled.
STRAIGHT DOPE: https://www.patronicity.com/project/clark_park_2025_classic_charity_hockey_games#!/
Our favorite member of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish is Jake Tafelski, a backup running back at Central Michigan University who entered the transfer portal and made a major upgrade to South Bend. His proud papa zooms in to talk about his son’s amazing journey, what it was like to follow the Irish on their way to the national championship game and to seemingly mention everyone he can think of before ML butts in.
Do college football players still go to class when they’re chasing a championship? Tom Tafelski tackles this question and addresses several other challenges facing college athletes and their families.
ML generously offers to take on the burden of travel and everything else that goes with chasing a championship, but Marc is skeptical that ML’s Michigan State Spartans will help him make good on his offer.
Shawn is frustrated that ML wants to talk college hockey — including a shoutout to the formidable Western Michigan University Broncos — before the talk turns to the Lions.
Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history, was the last Lions coordinator to leave for a head coaching job, back in the 1960s. ML, the ultimate authority on all things Lions, asks Marc and Shawn if they can name the last Lions head coach to get another head coaching job after leaving Detroit. They were stumped. Do YOU know the answer?
Shawn says Dan Campbell showed more grit than Marc, who left the Lions game before it was over. Shawn says tears came to Mr. Grit’s eyes as he reflected on what could have been.
Marc and Shawn praise Campbell for taking responsibility for the Lions’ loss, then challenge ML to face the Lions coach. ML says he’s willing to do it, even if he has to take on the Bernsteins, too.

GEEK OF THE WEEK: Elected officials who say one thing and do another are this week’s geeks. (We know; that doesn’t narrow it down much! So we offer a few high profile examples.)
ROOM 7609: The wildfires in LA have Todd turning to Yazoo and “State Farm” as both his geek of the week and guests in the New Wave suite. You can also send us your favorite deep cut or obscure band – and a story about them or why they mean something to you – by writing to mailto:mlsoulofdetroit@gmail.com.
FEEDBACK: A pastor with a kingsize suburban crib who just moved to Detroit to run for mayor stimulated at least one of your inquiring minds. We welcome all your comments – and constructive criticism – at mailto:mlsoulofdetroit@gmail.com

14 JAN 2025 · Mike Rataj and the Piece of Garbage reunite to reminisce about the origin of their charity hockey game at Clark Park after Marc comes up with the perfect intro and before Shawn zooms in.
STRAIGHT DOPE: https://www.patronicity.com/project/clark_park_2025_classic_charity_hockey_games#!/
Just as ML was preparing to board the Lions bandwagon, he was awakened by a phone call informing him the Leo’s first playoff game would take place at almost the exact same time as his charity hockey game. Listen and learn about the chaos that ensued. (Spoiler alert: The game will now be played at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Come out for the fun!)
Would Donald Trump make Kwame Kilpatrick the top federal prosecutor in Detroit? Mike defended Kilpatrick’s best bud Bobby Ferguson during the public corruption trial, but says watching Kilpatrick stump for Trump hit him hard.
ML surprises Mike with the inside story of the role the FBI played in the feds’ decision to prosecute Kilpatrick for public corruption after he resigned as mayor of Detroit. It’s a long story, well-told!
Marc wonders if it’s time to start celebrating “January in the D.” The Wings and Lions are undefeated in January, and the Pistons have only lost one game. MSU and U-M are doing pretty well, too!
Shawn zooms in and asks the question U-M and MSU fans dread: Who would you rather see win the national championship in college football — Notre Dame or Ohio State?

GEEK OF THE WEEK: ML faults public figures who blame the media for their PR problems, but don’t blame their moms, who said some of the same things. Shawn reaches back to the 70s for a mind-sticker GOW.
ROOM 7609: For the holidays, renaissance man Mr. Magoo offers the Hoodoo Guru’s “Tojo” — a tune that has a message that may resonate even more after Christmas. You can also send us your favorite deep cut or obscure band – and a story about them or why they mean something to you – by writing to https://gmail.com.
