Carl Stanton is confined to a life of boredom and pain, plagued by an unusual case of rheumatism while his fiancée enjoys her winter away. Desperate for connection, he pleads for her letters, but her replies are scarce and lackluster. Instead, she sends a ridiculous circular that she claims perfectly captures his longing for correspondence. In a moment of mischief, malice, and perhaps a touch of desperation, Carl decides to respond to the circular. This impulsive act ignites a whirlwind of letters that not only distract him from his ailments but also leads to unexpected revelations and encounters he never anticipated. (summary by Kehinde)
