Here are some of the conversations that took place in Stofan - A Public Living Room at the Reykjavík City Library.
Stofan was an experimental project where the Reykjavík City Library worked with different partners on placemaking in 2021 - 2024.
Each month a collaborator created a new temporary place that reflects specific social needs. This was a process where we temporarily transformed a space into a place for meaningful interactions. Stofan was a place for citizenship in the making, where you could negotiate ideas of belonging, perform your identity, connect with others and practice community care. We use all our senses to explore the surroundings, ideas and understandings we would like to see in our communities. In each step of this journey, we got closer to the library of the future. In the process we have danced, learned about rights, racism and climate issues, shared food and culture, told personal stories, took a shower, stayed silent, imagined different futures, painted and recharged our batteries.

Hér getur þú hlustað á nokkur af samtölunum sem fóru fram í Stofunni - A Public Living Room á Borgarbókasafninu.
Stofan var tilraunaverkefni sem fól í sér mánaðarlega umbreytingu á rýmum Borgarbókasafnsins í Grófinni frá 2021 til 2024. Ólíkir einstaklingar eða hópar fengu frjálsar hendur á safninu til endurskapa valið rými eftir sínu höfði. Með Stofunni skoðuðum við hvernig við viljum hafa almenningsrýmin okkar. Hvað er það við staði sem fær okkur til að setjast niður, staldra við og jafnvel hefja samtal við næsta mann?
Í Stofunni höfum við meðal annars stigið trylltan dans, frætt okkur um réttindi og loftlagsmál, deilt mat og menningu, sagt persónulegar sögur, farið í sturtu, aukið skynbragðið, dvalið í þögn, ímyndað okkur nýjar framtíðir og endurhlaðið batteríin. Yfirlit yfir fjölbreyttar útgáfur Stofunnar má finna á verkefnasíðunni: borgarbokasafn.is/stofan

25 JUN 2024 · Janosch Bela Kratz´s conversation was on the elements of immigration history and the culture around it. The community of the Facebook group “Away from home – living in Iceland” interested Janosch a lot and the discussion taking place there. In Stofan he wanted to take threads from these discussions and bring them into this warm and hidden place. In the centre of the discussion are the benefits and problematics of the Facebook community “Away from home – living in Iceland”, a private group with more than 21 thousand members with immigration background of all kinds. The content of the group is problematic when it comes to political opinions, discussions about racism and nationalism but it stands out as an archive of knowledge about almost everything a foreigner could possibly face in Iceland. A very exciting space, intimidating but important to create a discussion. With the conversation Janosch was trying to bring the community into the physical world. And raise questions like: Why do people feel the need to share about topics like racism in this group? What is their aim? What do people want from this group and what can it even give you back? Is the moderation done good? And how does one even manage this big of a group with hundreds of posts every week?
25 JUN 2024 · Achola Otieno opened the space with a conversation titled Beyond Melanin on issues of inclusion in Iceland. She discussed how some issues become mainstream while others are OTHERED. And how these two worlds meet. Her interest lies in analysing policies, their significance and their purpose in building inclusive communities, drawing from her personal experience as an immigrant living in Iceland, coupled with her expertise in human rights.
25 JUN 2024 · Anna Wojtyńska started a conversation with Patrycja Bączek, Adam Świtała og Lilianne van Vorstenbosch, who apply in their professional practice and/or academic enquiry creative methods like dance, music or movement to encourage inclusion. Anna is a is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Anthropology, University of Iceland. Her main research focus include labour migration and transnationalism.
