28 OCT 2019 · Join the conversation I had with Carlos Duran who is the SHPE President (’19-’20) at SDSU. Learn the obstacles he had to overcome as he went through La Jolla High.
*Taking a 40 min bus ride to be in school. Be at bus stop 6:13am sharp
*High school favorite subjects. Overcoming obstacles and staff turmoils
*Developing a strong MindSet and surmounting rejection by college/university admission
*Living in older sibling shadow
*Engineering choice based on sibling rivalry
*Joining SHPE, changing misconceptions. Jumped right into a VP Finance position, increased involvement
*Never heard word ENGINEERING up until San Diego City College
*Difference from community college to 4 year university (SDSU)
*Develop CONFIDENCE, time management through involvement/participation in SHPE
*Working on a school full on project from Conceptual to Financial aspects; all in 14 weeks.
*Achieving goals takes PATIENCE, DEDICATION & PERSISTENCE
*Zero Option Mentality; never considered giving up
*What motivated Carlos to keep moving.
*Looking for an internship; there is no clear process of guide
*Internship preparation begins about a year in advance; BE PREPARED
*Attend other university campus career fairs to increase your opportunities

If you really try you can make the time to join student orgs which will definitely help you prepare in your career. Allows meeting people with similar goals to succeed. Ultimately have a school-life-work balance.
Shout out to Skye Edwards (UCSD, SHPE president ’19-’20) is a great influence & role model.
How she observes the reason why there are less females in STEM courses. The response will surprise you!!
Value your childhood, it goes by too fast!!

*Understand that change is possible if you choose it.
*Learn the benefits of joining a student organization
*Insight on what it takes to go back to school if you decide to take a break after high school
*Keep sight of where you want to TRANSFER once you finish community college
*Take time to reflect (be philosophical) in order to review your path
*Keep an eye open for opportunities and meet new individuals (Meet Human Resources) in a relaxed environment
*Benefits you obtain from volunteering are greater than what you give
*Meditate and recognize your weaknesses and develop habits to counteract weakness
*Get a CALENDAR/AGENDA to keep yourself accountable
*Be adaptable, tenacious and persistent
We also touch and stress on building a network with like-minded individuals. This will allow you to learn from their experience, provide guidance on what obstacles they encountered and how they overcame them. When you are surrounded by like-minded individuals you become STRONGER!!!
Learn Bryan’s definition of SUCCESS!!!
Advice he would provide to his younger self!!!
Seek the Allegory of the Cave and understand that there is more to life than living in shadows!!!
Take risks in order to learn and grow!!!
