23 FEB 2026 · This week on Tales, Trails & Taverns, Rob takes Joe deep into the shadowed history of one of New England’s most infamous institutions: Taunton State Hospital. Opened in 1854 as the State Lunatic Hospital at Taunton, the sprawling Kirkbride-style complex was once considered cutting-edge in the treatment of mental illness.
Over the decades, its towering brick wards, overcrowded conditions, controversial treatments, and whispered rumors transformed it into something far darker in the public imagination. Rob walks Joe through the hospital’s history — from its early reform-era optimism to its decline, deinstitutionalization, and the eventual demolition of many of its original structures. 9 FEB 2026 · With Friday the 13th falling just days before Valentine’s Day, Joe takes Rob on a darker journey through love stories that didn’t end in happily ever after—but may not have ended at all. In this episode, Joe shares three tragic love stories rooted in New England history and legend, where heartbreak, betrayal, and obsession may have left something behind.
The first story brings us deep into the Freetown State Forest, to the cliffs of Assonet Ledge, where witnesses have reported seeing a mysterious Woman in White. To this day, hikers report strange sounds and unsettling feelings in the woods where she died—leading many to believe Nancy may still be searching.
The final story takes us to Rhode Island, overlooking Narragansett Bay, where the tragic life of Hannah Robinson unfolds. A young woman who eloped against her father’s wishes, Hannah’s love leaves her abandoned, impoverished, and gravely ill. When she is finally brought home to reconcile with her family, she asks to stop one last time at her favorite spot overlooking the water. She dies shortly after. Today, the Hannah Robinson Tower on Tower Hill Road stands as a memorial to a love that cost everything.
