31 AUG 2026 · Today we’re talking about pedigree hearsay and the genealogist’s evidence toolbox. Tonight’s episode falls back on the old pedigree hearsay doctrine to answer a few practical questions. When family history is preserved in stories, Bible entries, letters, parish registers, wills, census returns, and even civil registration, how do we decide what weight to give to each source. time we talk about whatever comes into our head building an audio library for genealogists with too much time on their hands judges in pedigree cases had to confront exactly the same problem that genealogists now face how to evaluate second-hand family information when the people with the first-hand knowledge are dead. So in this episode we explore the old legal doctrine of pedigree hearsay, a rule that sometimes allow courts to admit family stories, Bible entry and other second hand evidence to prove birth, marriage, death, legitimacy and descent. But what kind of family evidence would a court trust? What kinds would it distrust? And what can that teach genealogists about valuing the records we use every day. Please remember I’m not an expert or a professional. I’m an enthusiast like you who has spent more than 40 years digging up his family tree so often in the wrong place. It can, I hope, make us all better genealogists. Well that’s quite a low bar where I’m concerned and because it is important I want to take things steady slowly so we end up understanding what I’ve been chuntering on about. What I want to set out is what is pedigree hearsay? What does it mean in a historical legal practice and we’re going to look at it in that serious way and allied to that why pedigree was treated as an exception to the hearsay rule we’ll look at what safeguards the courts imposed connections to the familyations that are made before the dispute and the statement how close it is to concerning pedigree. We’ll then apply those principles to genealogical records and that’s pretty much all records as I say it goes from family entries in Bibles even to civil registration and everything in between. We will address how to weigh that evidence rather than merely collect it. I’m not going to turn this into a technical lecture of law evidence. If you want to know about the law then you ask a lawyer, you don’t ask me. Instead I want to use the old legal doctrine as a way of thinking about genealogical records, the ones that we use every day. It is that every source has to be weighed. Who said it, when, why, and how close were they to the facts? So, what is pedigree hearsay? Hearsay is what one person says heard another person say it can also be what the other person wrote down this means that it cannot be tested in court under cross-examination because the other witness isn’t available so it is either inadmissible straight out or of lower value. And there is a difference here between criminal law and civil law. Officialy, they say that hearsay is an out-of-court statement offered to prove the truth of what it says. But that seems pretty close to gobledygook to me, so I stick to the one that I’ve always heard. so I stick to the one that I’ve always heard. The point is that hearsay goes against natural justice because the original speaker cannot be cross-examined. Courts were historically, and still are, suspicious of hearsay because of this vulnerability. But pedigree hearsay is different, because pedigree facts – births, marriages, deaths, legitimacy and kingship – often survive through family memory, domestic record-keeping, inscriptions, even family correspondence, the reputation within the family, and statements by deceased relatives. In many cases, there was no better evidence available. So the problem that the courts faced in family history disputes were that the events were often old, the key witnesses are dead, the official records might be missing and the family status might turn on household knowledge rather than public documentation. So in this way the courts had to develop a limited expectation. Some hearsay, said the courts, could be admitted to prove pedigree. So, pedigree hearsay, to repeat myself, means second-hand statements or family records about family history, things like who someone’s parents were, whether a couple married, whether a child was legitimate. When the owner of that information, the relative, had died, in which case the courts were prepared to admit hearsay under certain conditions.09:36Now, regular listeners to the Talk Genealogy podcast will already be familiar with the massive scale and dramatic twists of the Barclay-Peerage case. For them, turning to the Whitelock and Baker case is like looking at the exact blueprint that made the Barclay consideration possible. Don’t worry, we’re going to go through this. What is especially nice about the Whitelock case is it gives me a chance to introduce Lord Chancellor Eldon. He was the judge in the case who set out some rules and he is a fascinating character we’ll talk more about him later on so now we’re talking about the Whitelock versus Baker or Whitelock and Baker as it’s more commonly known as like almost all pedigree cases of the era and we’re talking about 1807. This was a high-stakes English Chancery suit over inheritance of land. The plaintiff needed to legally map out a family tree to prove that they were the lawful heir. To do this, they tried to introduce a deposition, a formal written statement, made by an attorney who had worked closely with the family. Now the attorney was dead by the time of the trial but while he was alive he had written down a detailed account of the family’s genealogy based on what the family members had told him. The opposing side objected, claiming that this was classic, inadmissible hearsay because they couldn’t test it under cross-examination. This presented what has been called Lord Eldon’s famous dilemma. So famous that I’ve never heard of it. Lord Eldon was faced with a massive problem. If he strictly banned all hearsay, it would be practically impossible for anyone to prove their ancestry past a couple of generations, because people die and birth certificates at this time did not exist in a modern sense. However, if he allowed any old story about a family tree to come to court, people would just manufacture fake family histories to steal estates. To solve this problem, he admitted evidence, but used his judgment to lay down the philosophical and practical limits of the pedigree exemption.. Lord Eldon’s judgment it contains some of the most frequently quoted prose in evidence law. Now, these are the legal principles that he established and that we should use as well in our own consideration. He established two major ground rules. The doctrine of natural effusion. The Doctrine of Natural Effusion Lord Eldon explained that while we can trust a relative’s even casual chat about their family, even if they can’t be cross-examined, he stated that the family descriptions were admissible when, quoting here, they are the natural effusions of a party who speaks upon documentation of an occasion when his mind stands in an even position, without any temptation to exceed or fall short of the truth. In plain English, if a grandfather is casually writing names in a family Bible by the fireplace, he has no reason to lie. It is a natural effusion of family history. But if he writes it down knowing that a lawsuit is brewing, his mind is no longer even. He has a temptation to twist the truth. This was solidified into the rule of antilitum motem. Statements must be made before the controversy arises. I’ll just think of the implications of that for a will and we will come back to that later. Now this is the exact point on which the plaintiff in the Whitelock case actually failed. He established the principle but he failed the test. The plaintiff argued that because the dead attorney knew the family intimately, his notes should be counted as family tradition. Lord Eldon rejected this. He ruled that the exception is strictly limited to blood relatives and spouses. He noted that if you extended the exception to look at what friends, servants and medical men said, the rule becomes dang
5 AUG 2026 · Ethel Stokes was a woman whose quiet, determined labour shaped the archival landscape that historians, genealogists and local researchers depend on today. Her work was practical, unsentimental and profoundly influential, and it continues to benefit anyone who hunts ancestors in England. Much is made of her contribution because she was a woman, and the female role in genealogy is often underwritten or underplayed. In one special way, her life contradicts this. When we look at the list of women who have contributed to genealogy—Caroline Fennec and her lay subsidies, Helen Cam and her hundred rolls, Catherine Keats, Rowan’s two volumes of Doomsday People, and from the olden days the Duchess of Cleveland with her early work on the Conqueror’s companions—we see that Ethel Stokes fits into none of the usual categories. She was not an aristocrat, not a university professor, and she never held a grand public office. Instead, she spent more than thirty years quietly searching dusty repositories, deciphering medieval handwriting, tracing and chasing family pedigrees, and, perhaps most important of all, rescuing historical records before they disappeared forever.She looked an ordinary woman. She wore dowdy clothes, shorter than the prevailing fashion—almost as short as a boy’s—and sensible shoes. She was not in the best of health. She is often overlooked because she was more of an influencer, a motivator and a shaper. Her index of three million Londoners may be little used now, and her work for The Complete Peerage and the Victorian County Histories may be gathering dust, but her contribution lay in the structures and facilities she promoted: the preservation of documents that allow us to function today. She shaped the way we do genealogy in England, even in this digital and DNA age.Her life provides a window onto how our science operated decades ago. She shows us the tensions between genealogists, the fashions, and who was in control—very much like the generation of Horace Round years before, with similar tensions and different agendas. As we move into the 1920s and 1930s, we can see the same silos emerging. Much of what we know about her comes from A. J. Camp’s Memoirs of a Genealogist, Elizabeth Shepherd’s paper from the 1990s, and Shepherd’s recent book appraising the work of Stokes and other women archivists.Ethel Stokes left three main legacies for the genealogist. The first was the County Records Office system. She did not instigate or establish county record offices, but her move towards placing records in their local environment meant that when those offices were created, they had sufficient material to make themselves sustainable and useful. Her greatest legacy is almost invisible because it succeeded so completely. Through the records preservation section she founded with others in the 1920s, later absorbed into the British Records Association, she mustered over six hundred volunteers who located, rescued, sorted and redistributed archives across England so that they were in the right place when researchers needed them. Many of the collections she saved became the founding core of county record office archives.Her second contribution was the protection of records during World War II. When war broke out, she put aside her commercial work—she was already a very successful genealogist—and devoted herself to intercepting documents destined for the wartime paper salvage campaign. Working from an office in the Public Record Office, she reputedly slept under the library table during air raids, ensuring that irreplaceable historical material was not pulped.The third legacy was the Stokes and Cox Index. Her indexing work remains foundational. With Mary Louise Cox, her friend and partner, she built one of the earliest largescale attempts to index pre1837 parish registers. By the 1930s, the index held over three million entries, drawing heavily on the London Bishop’s Transcripts. Although parts of the index were later destroyed during the war, the project pioneered the very idea of a centralized genealogical finding aid—a concept that underpins modern digital genealogy.She was born in St Pancras in the late nineteenth century to a prosperous family and later lived in Maida Vale. She had a thorough, though slightly unconventional education. Opportunities for educated women were expanding but still limited, and although she received an excellent education, university was effectively beyond reach for many women of her background. Instead, at the age of eighteen, she entered the Public Record Office and discovered what would become her life’s vocation: historical records.Anyone who remembers their first encounter with old handwriting and ancient documents will appreciate the challenge she faced. Yet to her, these records were the living evidence of real people, families, communities and institutions stretching back centuries. She quickly realized that archives were not merely collections of old papers—they were the documented memory of a nation.Around this time she met Mary Louise Cox, who became her partner and friend for over forty years. They lived together, supported each other and sustained each other as they navigated the maledominated world of British archives. Mary came from a sound publishing family, and in the early years of the twentieth century, the two women set up business as Stokes and Cox at 11 Chancery Lane, operating as a records office agency. In the 1911 census they described their occupation as “hunting up genealogies and other historical records at the British Museum and elsewhere.” Their offices placed them within walking distance of the Public Record Office, the British Museum and many of London’s principal repositories.They soon identified a gap in facilities, and this led to the Stokes and Cox Index. The physical content of the index was later subsumed by Percival Boyd’s Marriage Index, and much of it was lost during the war, but the idea was revolutionary: a centralized search engine, albeit in millions of slips of paper. No longer did the genealogist go potluck into the nearest vestry. One could consult an index. It was a different world, and it determined how we do things today.Stokes and Cox soon found themselves with an international clientele. Families from Britain, North America, Australia, South America and continental Europe commissioned research. Some wished to establish family histories; others required documentary proof for inheritance cases or claims to titles. The level of scholarship required was immense. This was genealogy before photocopiers, microfilm, computers or digital photography. Every search involved physically visiting the archive. Every document had to be read by eye. Every transcription was handwritten. Every pedigree was constructed from original evidence. Accuracy was everything. An error could invalidate an inheritance claim worth enormous sums. Stokes became renowned for her meticulous standards. She never accepted assumptions simply because they appeared in earlier genealogies; she insisted upon documentary proof. Her evidencebased approach anticipated the standards expected of professional genealogists today.Her reputation brought her into contact with major historical publishing enterprises. One was the monumental Victoria County History, which sought to produce a scholarly history of every county in England. The scale of the project was extraordinary. Researchers spent years examining medieval charters, taxation records and estate papers. Stokes became one of its most trusted researchers, contributing mainly to the Essex volumes and helping to reconstruct political and institutional history from original evidence.Closely connected was The Complete Peerage, the definitive reference work for aristocratic and landed families. Celebrated for replacing legend with documentary evidence, it owed much to Ethel Stokes. Working alongside Herbert Arthur Doubleday for more than four decades, she undertook an immense volume of original research. Initially acknowledged merely for assisting with investigation, she gradually became recognized as supplying substantial portions of the research and even drafting many of the published entries. Later volumes openly admitted that many articles depended upon her investigations. Yet, as so often for women scholars of her generation, her contributions remained less visible than those of the male editors whose names appeared on the title pages.If genealogy established her reputation, archival preservation secured her place in history. During the early twentieth century, Britain faced an archival crisis. Thousands of local records remained in private hands—estate offices, solicitors, firms, parish vestries, borough councils—and private families possessed collections going back centuries. Many owners no longer appreciated their historical importance. Documents were routinely destroyed during office clearances. Old account books became scrap paper, bundles of medieval deeds were burned, parish papers disappeared, and manorial records were abandoned. Every year, irreplaceable evidence vanished.Stokes recognized the danger before most historians did. She understood that once destroyed, historical records could never be recreated. Without records, there could be no reliable history; without records, no trustworthy genealogy. This conviction inspired her greatest achievement. In the 1920s she helped establish what became the Records Preservation Committee of the Record Preservation Society, later incorporated into the British Records Association. 21 JUL 2026 · Today we're looking at one of the most ordinary features in any historic domestic plot—a feature that most families never thought about twice. It rarely appears in documents and rarely survives in memory, yet it can tell you more about daily life than almost anything else on the ground.We're talking about the household rubbish pit.We're not talking about the grand midden of an archaeological site or a municipal tip, just the place where a family put the things they no longer needed. If you can find it, and if you know how to read it, you can reconstruct the habits, priorities and rhythms of a household with a level of honesty that written records rarely provide.This is a practical guide for family history fieldwork, not academic excavation. I'm an enthusiast who has spent more than forty years digging up his family tree, often in the wrong place, and I'm sharing what I've learned along the way. I am talking about ancestor hunting in England.Why Rubbish Pits MatterWhat I like about rubbish pits is that they capture the unselfconscious side of life. People curate what they write. They curate what they keep. They guard their photograph albums carefully. They do not curate what they throw away.The contents reveal what a household bought, what it broke, what it repaired, what it discarded, and how it lived from day to day.Where to LookThe first step is to think like the people who lived there.Families did not want to walk far to throw things away, so they chose a place that was out of the way, downwind if possible, not visible from the main door, easy to reach in all weathers, and not needed for anything else.Stand on the back doorstep and ask yourself, "Where would I put it?" You won't be far wrong.On a cottage plot it's often the back corner. On a farm it may be near the boundary hedge. In a terrace it's usually at the far end of the yard. On a larger property it may be tucked behind an outbuilding.Reading the GroundA rubbish pit changes the soil. It makes it looser, darker, more aerated and often more fertile. The plants respond to those changes.You're not looking for exotic species. You're looking for contrast.Plants already growing on the plot may become taller, greener and more vigorous over the pit. Nitrogen-loving plants such as nettles, dock, fat hen and ground elder often thrive where food waste and organic matter have been buried. Disturbed ground may also attract brambles, birch saplings or willow scrub, while loose soils often encourage dandelions and ragwort.In spring the area may green up earlier, and during dry weather it may stay green for longer.No single plant proves anything. It's the patch that matters.As you walk the area, pay attention to your feet. A rubbish pit often feels softer, springier and slightly uneven. Frost or moles may also bring small fragments to the surface—pottery, glass, bone or clinker. These aren't the target, but they are the signature.How Deep Should You Dig?You don't need to dig far.Most of the material you're looking for lies within the top 20–40 centimetres. Expect the first signs of disturbed soil around 10–20 centimetres, with the main working depth between 20 and 40 centimetres.You rarely need to go deeper than 60 centimetres. If you think you do, stop. Either it isn't a domestic rubbish pit or it's an unusually deep one requiring a different approach.Safety comes first. Wear appropriate clothing, especially gloves, and make sure you have permission to investigate the site.The upper layers already tell you what the household bought, repaired, threw away and how it lived. Deeper digging usually adds little except risk.Understanding the Soil LayersThe first ten centimetres are ordinary topsoil containing roots, leaf litter and worm activity. Vegetation may appear unusually healthy.Between 10 and 20 centimetres you'll often reach disturbed soil. It becomes looser and darker than the surrounding ground, and small fragments may begin to appear.The main deposit is usually between 20 and 40 centimetres. Here you'll find mixed soil, ash, domestic waste, broken pottery, bottles, food bone and metal scraps. Everything appears uneven and clearly artificial.As you approach 50–60 centimetres you'll reach the natural subsoil—uniform clay, gravel or undisturbed earth. Once you reach this level, stop digging.Recording Your FindingsRecord everything in your notebook. You're not producing a catalogue of objects. You're recording behaviour.Start with the exact location. Note the distance from the house, the slope, drainage, shade and why this particular spot made sense for rubbish disposal.Record the surface clues that attracted your attention, including vegetation differences, visible fragments and the feel of the ground.Describe the soil profile, including the depth of disturbed soil, its colour and texture, any ash, charcoal or clinker, and where it meets the natural subsoil.When recording the contents, focus on types rather than quantities.For pottery, note whether it is coarse or fine, plain or decorated.For glass, identify whether it comes from bottles, windows or coloured glass.Record whether metal objects appear domestic or agricultural.For bone, consider whether it represents food waste and whether it has been butchered or burnt.Household objects such as buttons, pins, toys and tools can all help build a picture of everyday life.Look for signs that items were deliberately broken, repaired or reused. Consider whether the pit filled gradually over time or during a single episode. Also note whether debris has been burnt or left unburnt.Dating the MaterialDating different finds is a specialist subject, but useful clues are often available.Look for makers' marks, bottle shapes and pottery styles. Compare these with the known dates during which the family occupied the property. Even approximate date ranges help build a clearer picture of activity.What the Rubbish RevealsWhen you return home, think about what the finds tell you.What do they reveal about the family's habits, income, priorities, children, trades or livestock?Do the finds contradict what the documentary evidence suggests?Consumption patterns become visible. What did they buy? What did they replace? What lasted? What broke repeatedly? Is there evidence of a repair culture?Fine ceramics compared with coarse wares, branded bottles compared with plain ones, or imported goods compared with local products may all indicate different levels of income.Marbles, slate pencils, small shoes or broken whistles point towards children.Trade-related objects may reveal occupations not mentioned elsewhere.The most interesting discoveries are often the contradictions between what the documents suggest and what the ground actually reveals.Keep It SimpleRemember, you're not excavating as an archaeologist. You're investigating.The aim is understanding, not collecting.You don't need to remove everything, chase every fragment or expose the entire pit. Leave something for future generations.A single spade-width test trench is often enough to confirm the presence of a rubbish pit. Read the layers, identify the materials, date the activity and understand the pattern.The more you dig, the more you destroy.Final ThoughtsThink like the household. Use vegetation and the feel of the ground to locate the pit. Expect useful material within the top 20–40 centimetres. Read the soil layers as a sequence of behaviour rather than simply a layer of objects.Record the pattern, not just the finds. Interpret the rubbish as evidence of daily life, and always work safely, legally and responsibly.The household rubbish pit is one of the most honest sources available to the family historian. It shows what people really did, not what they said they did, and captures the unguarded side of everyday domestic life.

I've been doing a bit of D-Day research recently — I'm not a military historian, it's not my thing at all, so I've learned quite a little bit. But tonight we're going to listen to village cricket. You know, the game where the bowler is definitely aiming for the man.The Talk Genealogy podcast looks at different techniques and interesting sources for family historians, or perhaps a discussion about early genealogists, the pioneers of our science. Sometimes we look at how a famous character in history shows us something particular about genealogy. But hey, most of the time we talk about whatever comes into our head — building an audio library for genealogists with too much time on their hands.Please remember, I'm not an expert or a professional. These episodes are really no more than me sharing with you what I have learned along the way, and I do want to emphasise that I am talking about ancestor hunting in England.Onto the Village GreenWe're going to step onto the village green — not to talk about test matches or county legends, not to celebrate the great names of county cricket or the professional game, but to look at something far more intimate, far more revealing for family historians: the genealogical value of old village cricket.This is an episode about the cricket of our ancestors. The cricket played on rough commons behind the church, or on borrowed fields, or on the edge of the village where the land was flat enough to risk a straight wall. It's about cricket that belonged to the people long before the professionals arrived. And it's about those fragile, often overlooked records that can illuminate the lives, relationships and social worlds of the families we like to study.Tonight's QuizA bit of a mix this week. What do we mean by terminus post quem?The World Before the RulebookBefore we get into the sources, we need to understand the world we're dealing with. When we talk of village cricket before the mid-19th century, we're not talking about the structured, codified game we know today. We're talking about something looser, more organic, and deeply rooted in local custom.Underpinning the whole thing was money — staked or gambled on each match. Yes, even at this level. And to make the betting more attractive, one side might be allowed in advance to bat twice, or to import a skilled player from another village. Rules could almost be made up on the run.Cricket in the 18th and 19th centuries was a village pastime, played by labourers, farmers, tradesmen and occasionally — occasionally — the local squire, though the church and the squirearchy generally found it a bit too vulgar to take part in themselves. Matches were arranged informally, sometimes on the spur of the moment, sometimes as part of a feast day or a fair. There were no leagues, no county boards, no fixture lists pinned on the pavilion wall — because there was no pavilion.This matters enormously for genealogists, because it explains why early cricket records are so scarce. The game existed and it was popular, but it left very little paper behind. A match might be remembered in the pub for years, but unless someone wrote it down and kept the paper, it more or less vanished. Fortunately, so much pride — and so much money — was at stake that entries were sometimes made in parish journals.This is why we must resist the temptation to begin with the histories of professional cricket. Books like The History of Cricket in Hampshire or similar county studies are valuable in their own right, but they belong to a different world — the story of the professional game, the county game, the game of the gentleman and the groundsman. Our story is older, rougher, and much closer to the ground.A Family Story: Samuel the UmpireCricket does crop up in some of the books I've written about my own family history, so I thought I'd read a couple of extracts to illustrate tonight's talk.Samuel G. umpired a cricket match between Radcliffe Juniors and Bingham Juniors in 1864. That was his first mistake — volunteering to be an umpire — because the sports report in the Nottingham Guardian declared the match a draw "from the stupidity of the Radcliffe umpire, who, being only nine parts of a man, knew more about making breeches than the laws of cricket."Samuel was a tailor, and he replied in kind, arguing that the correspondent's own ignorance was showing, since — as he pointed out — tailors could boast among their number the name of Fuller. A bit of digging turned up who he meant: Fuller Pilch, a well-known batsman who developed a new style of striking the ball, and who had indeed trained as a tailor.1860: The Turning PointSomething did change around 1860. It didn't happen overnight, but the pattern was unmistakable. A new sporting elite begins to appear in village cricket — men who bring structure, ambition and paperwork. Who were they? Often the university-educated clergy, schoolmasters, young professionals, and sons of gentry who had played cricket at their college or in town clubs.These men arrived in the village with a sense of how cricket ought to be played. They standardised the rules. Regular fixtures, club committees and subscription lists suddenly appeared. They wrote minutes, kept scorecards, even ordered printed posters for matches, and corresponded with neighbouring villages to arrange home and away fixtures. Suddenly, the paper trail begins.This changed the rustic game forever — and for genealogists, this is the turning point. Before about 1860, cricket records are rare and accidental. After 1860, they become far more systematic — not universal, not complete, but far, far more likely to survive.This shift also changes the social meaning of cricket. It becomes a marker of respectability, a sign of community organisation, and a way for the village to present itself to the outside world. Villages tended to have their own scorer, but when he moved away or died, the papers often went with him.From 1800 onwards, newspapers become a primary source for village cricket, and they are astonishingly rich in detail. Why? Because cricket was village news — it was entertainment, it was a social event, and weekly newspapers needed copy. A typical match report for a village might include full team lists, batting and bowling figures, the names of umpires and scorers, who provided the tea, who donated the prize — and, more often than you might think, who fell out over an umpiring decision.Here's a longer example that captures the atmosphere well. In 1820, someone wrote to the paper:"Mr. Editor, in your last paper, a paragraph from Bingham professing to give your readers an account of the late cricket match between Grantham and Bingham, informs us that a slight altercation took place as to whether one of the two first Bingham players was caught... the Grantham umpire, with whom the decision lay, by the batter's sudden turning round could not distinguish the catch, having considerable bets depending upon the issue of this match..."Things got a little heated. The reporter replied that he had "not the leisure to answer the interrogatories of a nameless intruder," and that the correspondent, for the sake of his "very considerable bets," should apply to the secretary of the Grantham Cricket Club for the information he required. At that point, the editor closed the correspondence.Even the most light-hearted matches — married men versus single men, young against old, "our youngsters against your youngsters" — were reported with enthusiasm. And then there are the correspondence columns: disputes about umpiring, complaints about a village team's reputation for unsporting behaviour, accusations of unfair play, defences of local honour, even arguments about who should have been selected. These letters reveal relationships, alliances and rivalries that never appear in official records. They show who stood up for whom, who wrote well, who wrote angrily, and who was respected enough to have their letter printed. For genealogists, this is social texture — the kind of detail that brings families to life.The People Behind the PlayersOne of the most overlooked aspects of village cricket is the role of the non-player: the committees, the supporters, the women who made it work. Cricket teams were social institutions long before they were clubs. They organised summer fetes, harvest suppers, charity matches, even concerts and dances — and always, fundraising teas. Newspapers often recorded the names of the people, usually women, who decorated the tent, arranged the flowers, baked the cakes and ran the refreshments.One report describes a match that "muttered on" for three days, after which the visiting team marched home through the night, telling stories all the
