19 AUG 2026 · In which a mature mind reflects upon the evolution of his thoughts, offering clarifications and corrections on earlier works whilst emphasising the value of choosing literature wisely and treating books as treasured possessions. He imparts earnest counsel to young women, urging modesty, the rejection of idleness and cruelty, and the solemn but joyous use of youth’s earliest days as a foundation for a life of purpose and virtue.
21 AUG 2026 · In which the thoughtful reader is gently guided to cultivate self-awareness and daily improvement through honest reflection and practical service, especially in small, useful tasks that beautify and aid the lives of others. The instruction proceeds with a sober meditation on the nature of kindness and evil, urging a heartfelt commitment to alleviate suffering with steady, reasoned kindness rather than idle hope or complacent gratitude.
23 AUG 2026 · In which a thoughtful reflection on the virtues and shortcomings of women’s roles is gently unfolded, interwoven with an earnest letter from a French lady lamenting the perils of luxury and extravagance that have beleaguered her own society and may threaten another. The author confides in a candid and humble manner, revealing the complex interplay of admiration and realism through personal experience and historic sympathy, offering a measured guide to the delicate balance of character and conduct.
25 AUG 2026 · In which the lecturer invites us to contemplate the true treasures concealed within books, distinguishing the fleeting talk of the hour from the enduring wisdom inscribed for all time, and reflects on the common human pursuit of advancement through the craving for praise rather than sincere duty. He gently persuades us to recognise the noble society that waits patiently upon our shelves—the authors’ voices ready to instruct and uplift beyond the transient allure of passing acquaintance and popular distraction.
27 AUG 2026 · In which the reader is gently entreated to approach books with the reverence and earnestness due to a court of timeless intellects, requiring love, labour, and a patient unveiling of meaning beneath their surface. Words are shown to be vessels of profound power and subtlety, demanding careful study of their roots and true significance lest their masked complexities lead astray even the wisest minds.
29 AUG 2026 · In which the reader is invited to ponder the solemn office of true episcopal care as envisioned by Milton, distinguishing it sharply from the wrong ambitions of false clergy who seek power through creeping, intruding, or climbing. There unfolds a delicate examination of spiritual nourishment versus hollow puffing, where genuine oversight and feeding of the flock stand opposed to blind mouths and swollen winds, and the necessity of earnest, humble study to discern profound truths in noble writings is impressively urged.
31 AUG 2026 · In which John Ruskin meditates upon the vital importance of sensation as the noblest distinction of humanity, cautioning against the dullness and callousness that breed vulgarity and injustice in both individuals and nations. He proceeds to lament the English nation’s neglect of literature and science, illustrating a society distracted by trivialities and avarice, yet still holding a flicker of noble passion that may yet be disciplined and directed towards true honour.
2 SEP 2026 · In which the nation’s superficial embrace of Art is lamented as mere commerce and display, lacking true appreciation or care for its deeper beauty, while the ravages upon Nature are lamented as desecrations of sacred scenes for fleeting amusement. Compassion is profoundly despised, as revealed through a heartrending account of starvation and neglect, illustrating how society’s imagined Christianity fails to embody genuine charity or mercy towards the poor and suffering.
4 SEP 2026 · In which the restless spirit of our nation is portrayed as a great child, reckless and untrained, who strikes away the sacred teachings of the past and seeks false honours instead of true greatness of heart and mind. The writer gently exhorts us to imagine a nobler kingdom where wisdom, thought, and noble industry are the true treasures, and where peace and knowledge might be purchased instead of fear and war, offering a stirring vision of a better cultured and more compassionate society.
6 SEP 2026 · In which the discourse gently unfolds the noble and harmonious relations between the faculties and duties of women and men, proposing that true queenly power arises not from shadow or servitude but from steadfast wisdom and moral strength that ennobles all within their sphere. Through the admiration of Shakespeare's idealised heroines, Scott's dignified women, and the lofty guidance of Dante’s beloved, we are invited to contemplate the highest education and literature as the sovereign force shaping the gentle yet commanding influence of womanhood.
