10 JAN 2023 · What if every single note of a song could represent information and communicate ideas like lyrics do? What if we could give data a ‘voice’?
Think about that one song that makes your heart sing or moves you to tears. Or the last time you were in a movie theater and the sound effects had you on the edge of your seat. Sound - and by extension music - has the power to affect our mood, help us learn and even change our perspective on reality.
So when it comes to the intersection of music, information, and technology, it’s not a huge surprise that data sonification is now on the rise. Data sonification is the process of using non-verbal audio to communicate information. In other words, it transforms data into sound, helping us understand information faster and on a deeper, sometimes emotional level.
Just like a movie’s sound effects and soundtrack, data sonification can have a huge impact on our mood and our ability to grasp concepts more quickly. Imagine being able to hear your WiFi network, the communicative signals sent between a network of mushrooms - or even a pandemic. Believe it or not, that’s exactly what data sonification enables you to do.
So what are the practical applications of data sonification in the fields of education, health, and even business? How is it already being used to reach wider audiences and create inclusivity in science? Where does the line between science, art, and music lie, and is there a target market for this kind of art?
Join us in our latest podcast episode as we interview sonification experts Professor Paolo Ciuccarrelli (Northeastern Univeristy) and Research Scientist Sara Lenzi (Critical Alarms Lab, Delft University of Technology), as well as Degen Blues creator Andy Szybalski (also co-founder of Uber Eats and Google Street View) to discuss all these questions and much more.

17 OCT 2022 · Even in 2022, women are still vastly underrepresented in the music industry - especially when it comes to music engineering and production. In fact less than 5% of music production jobs globally are filled by women. At Musixmatch, we’re passionate about breaking down industry barriers to pave a new way for the next generations of women in music tech. That’s why we teamed up with Music Innovation Hub (the innovative Milan-based initiative behind many socially responsible projects in the music industry) to organize a meet-up last month for Women in Music Tech and Production. Panelists for this event included, Francesca Ronchini, an expert on sound event detection, Giulia Silvestri, the project coordinator for Intorno Labs, and Elisa Massara (Elasi) musician, producer, & founder of POCHE.

8 SEP 2022 · Songwriting. Producing. Performing. Motherhood.
These multi-talented, kickass women really are doing it all. Already incredible stand-alone artists in their own right, Dossey, Primo the Alien and Lady Heartwing have joined forces to create Austin’s newest indie-pop supergroup KVN (pronounced Kevin). KVN’s intergalactic sound was born out of the trio’s mutual love for late 90s R&B girl groups blended with a fascination for modern dance music.
They may call themselves “your mom’s favorite band”, but in a town where rock and blues reign supreme, KVN is disrupting the Austin music scene in the best way possible. It’s no wonder that everybody who comes across their high-energy, harmony-driven pop just can’t stop raving about it.
Join us in our latest episode of “The Mix” to learn more about their experiences as music producers, how they made a name for themselves both locally and internationally through branding and social media, and all about their heavenly first release, “High and Low”.
If you’re a fan of dreamy astral synths, gorgeous harmonies and smashing social expectations - this one’s for you.
