  • Irvine to the Summit

23 JUN 2024 · My recovery trail run covered a distance of 7.20 km with an elevation gain of 232 meters, taking a total time of 1 hour and 7 minutes. The route started at Irvine and wound through lush, green forested areas, as evident from the trail map. Along the way, Carlos maintained an average cadence of 58 steps per minute. The run took me to the summit, rewarding me with a great view and the sight of a hollow, moss-covered tree trunk, indicating the natural beauty of the trail. This run was a moderate effort on challenging terrain, suitable for both physical recovery and mental rejuvenation.

  • From Elford St. to Work

16 JUN 2024 · I ran to work today from the top of Johnston Street after getting off the 28 bus. I needed to be there by 7:30 to get the dish-pit up and running for a busy day at my part-time job. The early morning was cool and quiet, a nice contrast to the hectic day I knew was ahead. Once I arrived, I jumped right into getting everything set up, from preparing the sinks and organizing the cleaning supplies to ensuring all the dishes from the previous day were spotless and ready to use.The first few hours flew by as I scrubbed, rinsed, and stacked dishes, pots, and pans, making sure everything was ready for the incoming rush. I worked hard, focusing on maintaining a fast pace while still being thorough. By mid-morning, the kitchen was buzzing with activity, and I was glad to see my preparation paying off as the workflow remained smooth despite the increasing volume of work. Finally, after several intense hours of non-stop work, I finished my tasks by noon. I felt a sense of accomplishment as I looked around the now-clean and orderly dish-pit, ready for the next shift to take over.

  • The full 'Cedar Chip' Audio

12 JUN 2024 · This morning, I ran 3.6 kilometers around the Cedar Hill Golf Course chip trail, starting and ending at the northwest corner near Kings Pond. The crisp air and serene beauty provided a perfect backdrop as I navigated the varied and challenging terrain. Gentle slopes and steeper inclines kept the run engaging, with each twist revealing new scenic vistas. A brief pause at Kings Pond halfway through was refreshing, motivating me to push on. Finishing my run, I felt accomplished and energized, ready to tackle the day ahead.

  • Mashing on the Hill of Happiness

9 JUN 2024 · Mostly heavy breathing on the video based episode... This morning, I tackled a challenging hill repeat workout on Mt. Douglas in Victoria, BC. After setting up my music and adjusting the volume, I started running up a steep hill. My heart rate quickly climbed from around 70 to 133 BPM, pushing me into zone three for a tough workout. After a combination of running and hiking, I eventually reached the top of the hill, touching my usual post before heading back down. On the way down, I filmed the run and planned to upload the video before heading to work. Despite technical issues with my camera, I managed to capture most of the route and concluded my exercise by running back up the hill. The full camera footage from this outing in low resolution.

  • Douglas Street Run In

2 JUN 2024 · Good morning everyone, https://www.facebook.com/groups/166292510760815/user/1219636491/?__cft__[0]=AZV_zExSpHldnK4PKXBDDAUptWxLDOVFyHblvVV3CBU80SWsHUB398NqF84F39p3cHj6LoX-8-7V20BTdpHgZKJCAvsJxCYeuJ3XiN1cu26ZbeimvTDwq-URcsoJyfszPARYd4R8QyBBDQjb7uXFWogcgEDs5mTjv3hlobp_BbN4baf1k8dVPE6jrQJnJqtkzIbClYcNSoC6mcs-rNSUaTaYUke-UtdjBHDpXIHZLQWI0g&__tn__=R]-R here, ready to embark on my Sunday adventure. Today, I'm catching the 28 bus instead of my usual 27 because it gets me to my destination at a more convenient time. Fort Street, where I'm heading, is named after the historic Fort Victoria and intersects with the bustling Douglas Street in downtown Victoria.I'll also be sharing an update on Norma's back surgery—she had a spot removed for biopsy, and I've been helping dress her wound daily. As for me, I'm working a couple of hours today due to a shortage of chefs, so I’m running to work from Fort Street to Little Piggy's Cater. On my way, I'll take some scenic photos and enjoy the views, like the beautiful Johnson Street Bridge and the serene Inner Harbour. It's overcast but still gorgeous, and I'm capturing these moments for my podcast and trailer video. Thanks for joining me on this run; I’ll upload the audio once I get home. This is the Running Jackal signing off from my Sunday run to work. Have a great day!

  • The Salmonberry Run 2024

29 MAY 2024 · During our run, we discussed the meadow's plants and insects, noting how taller plants could avoid being eaten. We found and tasted a salmonberry, which was delicious but needed to ripen more. We talked about the health benefits of running compared to medication, despite some physical discomforts. Crossing creeks and navigating muddy trails, we appreciated the sun and hoped for trail drainage after the rain. Finally, we planned our route, including Glen Denning and Churchill Drive, aiming to maintain a good pace and enjoy the journey.
