  • Real and Scary Encounters with the Grim Reaper

2 JUL 2024 · Real and Scary Encounters with the Grim Reaper For thousands of years, various cultures have had figures to represent death. One of the most common and enduring of these is the Grim Reaper—usually a skeletal figure, who is often shrouded in a dark, hooded robe and carrying a scythe to “reap” human souls. But how and when did this imagery come to be associated with death? The Grim Reaper seems to have appeared in Europe during the 14th century. It was during this time that Europe was dealing with what was then the world’s worst pandemic, the Black Death, believed to be the result of the plague. It is estimated that about one-third of Europe’s entire population perished as a result of the pandemic, with some areas of the continent suffering far greater losses than others. The original outbreak of the plague occurred during 1347–51, and outbreaks then recurred several other times after that. So, clearly, death was something that the surviving Europeans had on their mind, and it is not surprising that they conjured an image to represent it.But why the skeletal figure? Why the scythe? Why the robe? Skeletons are symbolic of death, representing the human body after it has decayed. The robe is thought to be reminiscent of the robes that religious figures of the time wore when conducting funerary services. The scythe is an apt image taken from agricultural practices of the time: harvesters used scythes to reap or harvest crops that were ready to be plucked from the earth…and, well, that’s kind of what happens when humans die: they are plucked from this earth.

  • The Murder Of Janet Abaroa AND David Crespi Murdered His Two Daughters - True Crime Documentary

1 JUL 2024 · The Murder Of Janet Abaroa AND David Crespi Murdered His Two Daughters - True Crime Documentary Janet Abaroa, 26, was brutally killed inside her house on the evening of April 26th, 2005, while her six-month-old son slept soundly in the next room. The brutal murder of a young mother stunned Durham and devastated her family and friends. Raven Abaroa, her worried husband, dialed 911 in a panic. Not long after her murder, he was the one who discovered her body. Raven and Janet were college sweethearts who married soon after graduation. On the surface, their relationship appeared to be great, but family and friends were concerned. Raven was caught embezzling from his work, which was the most surprising recent information leading up to Janet's death. Raven's knife collection was mysteriously missing from the house on the night of Janet's murder, and he stood to gain $500,000 from his wife's life insurance policy. Raven, on the other hand, had an alibi: he was at a soccer game in the evening. Janet was in bed watching TV when he departed, he said cops (her nightly routine). He had no idea that this minor detail would lead to a new finding in the case. The case remained unsolved for five years. Raven moved on with his life and married Vanessa Pond in Salt Lake City, Utah, with his kid. In 2013, Zwerling received the evidence package, which included dried contact lenses. The contact lenses rehydrated when he added a saline solution, demonstrating that they were in Janet's eyes at the time of her murder and after she was buried. While Raven maintains that he did not murder Janet, the rest of the world, including his second wife, believes he did.

  • Disturbing Scene Unfolds: Chaos Ensues As Racist Man Gets Confronted!

1 JUL 2024 · Disturbing Scene Unfolds: Chaos Ensues As Racist Man Gets Confronted!  At 12:23 PM on April 15, 2023, officers in Ohio were called to address a disturbance complaint involving a local resident, Jeffrey Holmes, who was reportedly shouting at individuals in a nearby park. Upon arrival, the officers were confronted by Holmes, who was aggressive and warned them against setting foot on his property. The officers attempted to defuse the situation by requesting Holmes to step out to the street for a conversation. Holmes obliged and was advised about the complaint lodged against him, accusing him of hurling insults and threats at park-goers. In his defense, Holmes claimed his right to freedom of speech and to consume alcohol on his property. The officers enquired if he was carrying identification. At this point, Holmes retreated towards his house. After sitting in his backyard, Holmes sporadically shouted greetings at the park visitors. Meanwhile, Officer Taylor spoke with the complainant, who claimed Holmes shouted racial slurs and threats at people in the park. He also told Officer Taylor he frequently spots Holmes on his property, even after warning him he is trespassing. After taking the complainant’s statement, the decision was taken to arrest Holmes for disorderly conduct while under the influence. Holmes was arrested as he yelled at officers and was informed about the charges against him. Officers then escorted Holmes to the Hamilton County Justice Center.

  • Mother Tased & Arrested at School Drop-Off for Breaking Protection Order

1 JUL 2024 · Mother Tased & Arrested at School Drop-Off for Breaking Protection Order  On January 18th, 2024, a school resource officer in Ohio requested backup to a situation at a local school where a suspect was reported for violating a protection order. Earlier that week, the principal had received a complaint from a concerned parent who spotted the suspect dropping a child off at the school. Officers reviewed footage of the suspect at the school earlier that week, confirming she had been violating the protection order. In the early hours of the morning, the officer located the suspect inside her vehicle, who initially refused to stop and talk with the officer, stating she was calling her attorney before driving away. The officer followed the suspect in his vehicle, where the suspect stopped and refused to exit her vehicle despite multiple commands. The situation escalated quickly, with the officers employing the placement of stop sticks under the vehicle's tires. The confrontation continued to escalate as the suspect resisted arrest, kicking at an officer as he attempted to remove her from the vehicle. Despite the officers' attempts to de-escalate, the suspect continued to shout and refuse to cooperate, leading to the deployment of an officer’s taser. The struggle persisted on the ground, with the suspect refusing to release her hand before eventually placing her securely in handcuffs. After finally being securely detained and placed into a patrol car, the suspect was taken into custody and later evaluated by medical personnel. The suspect did not report any injuries and was cleared by medical personnel. The suspect was charged with Violation of a Protection Order, Assault, Failure to Comply with the Order or Signal of a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, Obstructing Official Business, & Disorderly Conduct.

  • Drunk Belligerent Man Arrested After Police Confrontation!

1 JUL 2024 · Drunk Belligerent Man Arrested After Police Confrontation!  On April 6th, 2023, officers in New Mexico responded to a call about a man, identified as Mark Anthony, who had been making threats. Following the call, officers located Anthony, who was intoxicated and disorderly, informing him that he was being arrested for his unruly behavior. While the officers were reading out his Miranda rights, Anthony consistently disrupted the process. He confessed to being heavily under the influence of alcohol, a fact that was corroborated by the overpowering scent of alcohol on him. Further substantiating evidence came from a partially consumed liquor bottle found in his gray GMC pickup truck. Anthony was placed in handcuffs from behind. He was then led to the police car and secured in the back seat. Despite repeated attempts by the officer, Anthony declined to disclose his full name or consent to a mouth check, which would initiate a twenty-minute deprivation period. Following this, he was taken to the Artesia detention facility for processing. On reaching the jail, Anthony's non-compliance continued. He decided to sit on the floor and resist moving, even with assistance. The New Mexico implied consent was read to him, but he refused a breathalyzer test. He was charged with Disorderly Conduct, Neglient Use of a Deadly Weapon, and Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated.

true crime is a nonfiction literary, podcast, and film genre in which the author examines an actual crime and details the actions of real people. The crimes most commonly include murder; about 40 percent focus on tales of serial killers.

As much as we love listening to a celebrity interview or cultural discussion, there’s nothing quite like a true crime podcast to keep you hooked for hours on end.

There’s a reason why so many true crime series have climbed the podcast charts over the years – from the genre-defining brilliance of Serial to the unexpected twists and turns of Sweet Bobby, true crime is the genre that just keeps on giving.

True crime has never been more popular than it is today, as evidenced by the astonishing number of podcasts, TV shows, and documentaries dedicated to the genre. At its core, however, true crime is a type of nonfiction literature. From influential works like Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood (1966) to modern-day investigations such as Michelle McNamara’s I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (2018) or Elon Green’s Last Call (2021), such narratives are unique in the way they connect with their readers, precisely because they explore harrowing real-life events that could happen to anyone.

Want to know more about true crime? Here we define the genre, take a fascinating look at its origins, and cover some of its common themes.

The Definition of “True Crime”
It seems like the definition of true crime would be obvious: A story about a crime that actually occurred. Indeed, most true crime books explore dark and distressing subject matter, and reader discretion is advised. Granted, the first rule of true crime is that the narrative must include as many nitty-gritty facts about the case as possible: Readers expect the actual names of people involved and the correct time and place, information about what they did, and as many details of the crime and its investigation as the author can dig up.

True crime books can be about a single event, like a kidnapping. They can also be about the collective crimes of serial killers, thieves, or cult leaders. However narrow or broad the focus, the best true crime books deliver well-researched, finely written examinations of the case at hand.

But the wealth of details is just half of what makes true crime so popular with readers. The most talented true crime authors excel at presenting the facts of a case while vividly re-creating the atmosphere that surrounded the crime. They put criminals and their victims in context by establishing elements like the political climate of the day, the history of a town, or the struggles faced by a particular community. They dig into everyone’s motives, then weigh these motives against the actions and developments they document. They re-create dialogue as faithfully as possible, although of course sometimes it’s necessary to take artistic liberties.

In other words, the most popular true crime authors transport readers to the scene of the crime, with all senses fully engaged. Without an author’s narrative talents, the details of the crime would simply read like a legal report.
