This episode is for the person who loves America but is not sure the faith argument applies to them. The person who can feel that something is wrong but has not yet connected the dots. The person who is skeptical of religious arguments but cares deeply about freedom, about their children's future, and about the kind of country America is becoming.
Tom Sears makes the case today that the removal of America's Christian foundation is not primarily a religious issue. It is a historical one. And history is not ambiguous about what happens when governments decide that human dignity does not come from God.
The Soviet Union thought they were building a better world. So did Nazi Germany. So did Mao's China. So did the Khmer Rouge. Every one of them rejected the idea that rights come from God. Every one of them produced mass graves. That is not alarmism. That is the documented record of the 20th century. And it raises a question that almost nobody in the current debate is asking.

8 AUG 2026 · America is not having a political argument right now. It is having a foundational one. And those do not resolve the same way.
For as long as most people can remember, the assumption has been that the battles playing out in American culture are just the normal back-and-forth of a diverse democracy. Left and right. Liberal and conservative. The pendulum swings, and eventually it swings back.
That assumption is wrong. And understanding why it is wrong is the beginning of understanding everything else happening in this country right now.
In Episode 2 of the Battle Is On series, Tom Sears lays out the two visions of America that are competing for the soul of the nation. Not two political platforms. Two completely different answers to the most foundational questions of human life. Where do rights come from. What is a human being. What holds a free society together. Two answers so different they cannot permanently coexist. Only one of them can win.
Tom also addresses the hardest objection to America's Christian heritage head-on. The slavery argument. And he brings in the most powerful possible answer to it. Not a political argument. A historical one. Frederick Douglass was a man who had been enslaved and had every reason to reject the founding as fraudulent. 10 JUL 2026 · Every generation inherits a story about who it is. The question is whether the story it inherits is true.
For most of American history, that story wasn't especially controversial. The founders were flawed men who nonetheless believed they were building something under God, a conviction they stated plainly, repeatedly, and on the record. That's not an interpretation. It's documented, in their own words, in primary sources anyone can still read today.
So why does so much of what gets taught and celebrated today sound like a different country entirely? Historical revisionism doesn't usually work by lying outright. It works through three quieter mechanisms: omission, reframing, and replacement. Leave out the founders' own religious language. Reframe providence as coincidence and conviction as ambition. Replace the primary sources with a narrative that's easier to teach and harder to challenge, because most people never go back and check the original documents for themselves.
It's worth noting how far this has reached. Curriculum standards adopted in the 1990s reshaped how American history gets taught in public schools. Some of the country's most influential universities shifted from forming citizens in a shared civic and religious inheritance to critiquing that inheritance as something to be overcome. Courts reinterpreted the First Amendment in ways that the founders who wrote it would not recognize. And Christianity's role in American history increasingly gets treated in the media as an embarrassment to be managed rather than a fact to be reported.
Here's what should give every American pause, regardless of where they land politically: this erasure cannot survive contact with the primary sources. Frederick Douglass, a man with every reason to be unsparing about America's failures, did not conclude that the founding documents were the problem. He argued the opposite: that the Constitution, read honestly, was an anti-slavery document, and that the gap between America's founding ideals and its practice was the very thing worth fighting to close. That's not a minor footnote. It's a direct challenge to the idea that honest engagement with the founding leads to its rejection.
This isn't an abstract debate. 2026 marks America's 250th anniversary, and the anniversary itself has become a case study. Watch closely this year: what gets celebrated, and, just as tellingly, what gets quietly left out. The gap between what the founders actually said about God's hand in the founding and what official commemorations are willing to repeat is its own kind of evidence.
You don't have to take anyone's word for this, including mine. Go back to the primary sources. Read the founders in their own words. That's the whole point: the erase project only works on people who never check.

In the series finale of "250 Years: Did We Keep the Republic?" Tom Sears brings it all home with the hardest question of the series: can America survive another 250 years? And if the answer is yes, what is God requiring of this generation to make it happen?

7 JUL 2026 · When Benjamin Franklin walked out of Independence Hall in 1787, a woman reportedly asked him what kind of government the delegates had created. His answer has echoed for over two centuries: "A republic, if you can keep it."
That question was the spine of our four-part series, Did We Keep the Republic?, released in honor of America's 250th birthday. Across four episodes, we asked what it actually means to "keep" something that was never handed to us finished, a republic that has always required defending, correcting, and rebuilding, generation after generation.
But four episodes were never going to be enough to answer that question. They were designed to raise it. The full answer is what I spent the last 23 years researching and writing down, and it's the reason The Battle Is On exists.
Here's the thing I didn't fully say on the air: America is in a civil war right now. Not one fought with muskets, but one fought over the soul of the nation, its identity, its history, its foundational convictions, and its future. On one side, those who believe America's founding was a providential breakthrough rooted in a biblical understanding of human dignity and God-given rights. On the other hand, those who believe the founding itself was the problem, and that the path forward requires dismantling it rather than restoring it.
That's not a partisan fight. It's a fight over truth, historical, moral, and spiritual. And it's the fight the series only had time to gesture at.
The book picks up where the series left off and deliberately closes the loop. Its final chapter is titled, quite literally, "Did We Keep It?" a sober, honest, hopeful assessment of where America actually stands at 250 years. What's been lost. What can still be recovered. And what's asked of a generation that didn't arrive in this moment by accident.

In Part 3 of "250 Years: Did We Keep the Republic?" Tom Sears exposes the systematic effort to erase America's Christian heritage and how remarkably successful it has been. It didn't happen with book burnings or dramatic declarations. It happened in three quiet stages: omission, reframing, and replacement. And by the time most people noticed, an entire generation had already been shaped by the new version of the story.
Tom walks through the 1994 National History Standards that mentioned George Washington exactly once while dedicating dozens of references to McCarthyism and the KKK. He addresses the slavery argument head-on and shows why Frederick Douglass, a man who had every reason to reject the founding documents, called the Constitution a glorious liberty document and wielded it against the very injustice it had failed to prevent. He examines how Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, every one of them founded with an explicitly Christian purpose, became the engines of the secular worldview that now dominates every major American institution.
And then Tom says the thing nobody wants to hear. The erasure didn't happen only because of hostile forces outside the church. It happened because the church retreated. The schools, the universities, the media, the legal system, the public square, ground surrendered not because the enemy was stronger, but because the people of God didn't show up.

In Part 2 of "250 Years: Did We Keep the Republic?" Tom Sears walks through the three pillars the Founders built this nation on: the sanctity of the individual conscience, the necessity of virtue in the governed, and the covenant nature of the American experiment.
These weren't political theories; they were biblical convictions. And Washington, Adams, Madison, and Lincoln all said the same thing in different ways: without God, the republic cannot stand.
Then Tom asks the harder question. What happened to those pillars? From the prosperity of the Industrial Revolution to the theological liberalism that gutted the mainline churches, to the Supreme Court decisions of 1962 and 1963 that removed prayer and Bible reading from public schools, the unraveling didn't happen overnight. It happened the way it always does. Slowly. Quietly. One compromise at a time.
