In the heart of a Sardinian village, Giovanna and Costantino Ledda seem like the perfect couple, blissfully raising their young child among family. However, their idyllic life shatters when Costantino is wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of his malevolent uncle. Faced with an uncertain future, Giovanna is forced to make a harrowing choice—divorce her innocent husband and marry Brontu Dejas, a wealthy yet brutish drunkard who has long desired her. As she grapples with a marriage that feels like slavery and endures the scorn of her community for having two husbands, hope flickers when the real murderer finally confesses. Reunited with Costantino, their love ignites once more, but it now exists in the shadows of societal and religious constraints, leading them down a perilous path. This gripping tale, penned by Nobel Laureate Grazia Deledda in 1926, beautifully captures the struggles and passions of Sardinian life, making After the Divorce (Dopo il Divorzio) one of her most remarkable works. - Summary by Tom Denholm
