Around 1:40 AM on July 4, 2023, Patrolman Baran with the Seaside Heights Police Department was on bike patrol on the boardwalk, and he observed a woman smoking on the boardwalk. He made contact with the female, later identified as 19-year-old Jessica Szewczyk, and informed her that smoking on the boardwalk is a violation of borough ordinance. He asked Jessica for her identification as well as her information, and escorted her over to Franklin Avenue and Ocean Terrace. Around this time, she provided a false date of birth indicating that she was a 23-year-old instead of a 19-year-old. Patrolman Baran returned to his patrol car to run her information through the system, and another officer was speaking with her during this time. A few minutes later, Patrolman Baran learned that she had provided false information. Once he had confirmed that Jessica was lying about her age, he placed her under arrest under 2C:29-3B(4) for hindering oneself and giving false information. After placing her under arrest, Patrolman Baran searched Jessica and transported her to the police station for further processing. Records indicate that she was placed in a cell at 2:20 AM and subsequently released at 2:58 AM pending her court appearance. About 1 month later on August 5, 2023, Jessica was arrested again for driving under the influence in West Milford, New Jersey. This arrest occurred after she drove her vehicle into an embankment, and her Alcotest results indicated a BAC level of 0.05%.
