Mental Health issues are something people are becoming much more comfortable talking about, but at the Charlton School in Burnt Hills, the discussion had already been going on for decades. In this episode of Upstate Issues, Alex Capo, LMHC, Executive Director at The Charlton School talks about the school’s individualized approach to helping young women cope with mental health issues while readying them for life after high school. Capo says there has been an increase in ER visits for girls 12-18 for a variety of mental health issues including self-harm and substance abuse in the last year. He says the all-girl environment takes some of the stress away as the healing begins. At the Charlton School, these intelligent and creative young women learn skills to work through emotional and mental health issues through attendance at either a residential or high school program.
