show moreAround 11:55 PM on August 4, 2024, officers with the Edgewater Police Department were dispatched to the scene of a 3-car crash on River Road in the vicinity of Hilliard Avenue. Patrolman John Hansen arrived on scene around 11:57 and made contact with the driver of a 2015 Infiniti QX60. He observed that the Infiniti had sustained severe front-end damages and there was airbag deployment inside the vehicle. The driver was identified as Lauren, and she told Patrolman Hansen that she was headed home and that she had just left Volume Up Karaoke in Edgewater.
Patrolman Hansen asked her if she had consumed any alcohol earlier that evening. She admitted to consuming 3 beers before operating a motor vehicle. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Lauren was asked to perform field sobriety exercises.
Patrolman Hansen started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, he observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn Test. During the Walk and Turn test, Lauren failed to touch heel-to-toe on each step, took an incorrect number of steps, and failed to turn. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Lauren failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and used her arms for balance.
Based on the motor vehicle accident, her admission to consuming alcohol earlier, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Lauren was placed under arrest. The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was transported to Palisade Medical Center for further evaluation. After Lauren was placed under arrest, her vehicle was impounded for a 12-hour hold according to John’s Law. Patrolman Hansen transported Lauren to the Edgewater Police Department for further processing. At the station, she was read the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators and she agreed to submit breath samples. Her Alcotest results indicated a BAC of 0.21%, which was more than double the legal limit of 0.08%.
After they were finished processing Lauren, she was released to her mother pending her court appearance after she signed the Potential Liability Warning on Lauren’s behalf. Patrolman Hansen issued Lauren the following citations: Operating under the influence, reckless driving, and careless driving: operate motor vehicle causing property damage.
