Welcome to the 3rd Sunday in October as we conclude our series, The Good Shepherd. As I’ve shared before, Psalm 23 is a psalm of trust, of peace, of provisions, and devotion. Today, we will cover verse 6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
I. God’s got you in the here!
- David says, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.”
- At this juncture in life, David is very confident. He considers his past. God has been leading, guiding, and directing him. Even in the darkest valleys and bitter storms, God has been protecting him. And when he was in need, God has been providing for him, blessings overflowing.
- He sees God out front with a rod of protection and a staff of direction and rescue.
- Then he notices that all along God sent spiritual twins to cover his six, to cover his back. Those twins are called goodness and mercy. These are the same twins the LORD sends to cover our backs. When the Lord is our Shepherd, instead of being stalked by wild beasts we are pursued by the loving care of the Lord.
II. God’s got you in the hereafter!
- David says, “And I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”
- David realizes no matter what happens on this side of glory, he will be with the LORD forever because he has accepted the Good Shepherd as his LORD and Savior.
- Job 13:15 KJV Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him.
- David understands the ups and downs of life. He knows he will not always get it right.
- Psa 27:4 NKJV One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple.
- Like David, the one thing we should desire is to be with the LORD forever. Jesus has prepared the place.
Conclusion: I pray today that we all know or will come to know the Good Shepherd for ourselves. God’s got us in the here and the hereafter if you have Jesus. Amen. The door of salvation is open.
