Most Cooperative DWI Ever: Drunk Woman Arrested After Blowing Through 2 Stop Signs

Around 1:50 AM on February 19, 2023, Officers James Aldrich and Shane Marshall with the Saratoga Springs Police Department observed a 2014 Mazda CX5 traveling southbound on Henry Street fail to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with Phila Street. As they followed the vehicle, they observed the driver fail to stop at the intersection with Spring Street as well. They continued to follow the Mazda as the driver headed east on Spring Street, south on Broadway, and then made a right hand turn onto Congress Street. They initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Congress Street and Hamilton street and made contact with the driver, who was identified as 28-year-old Serafina. Serafina told the Officer Aldrich that she was headed home after leaving work at Taquero. The officer detected the odor of alcohol and asked her how much she had to drink. Serafina admitted to consuming 2 drinks, including a Manhattan and a Porkslap. She said that she consumed her most recent drink at the Caroline Street Pub. Based on his observations, he asked Serafina to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises. Officer Aldrich started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test and the final exercise was the One Leg Stand test. After the field sobriety exercises, Serafina was asked to take a portable breathalyzer test, which indicated that there was alcohol in her system.Based on her erratic driving, the odor of alcohol, her admission to consuming alcohol, her inability to adequately complete the field sobriety exercises, and the results of the portable breathalyzer test, Officer Aldrich placed Serafina under arrest for driving under the influence. After she was handcuffed, she was searched by Officer Kateri Marotta. Her car was parked in the Wendy’s parking lot and she was transported to the Saratoga Springs Police Department for further processing. At the station, Serafina waived her Miranda rights and agreed to answer questions. She also submitted breath samples and the chemical test indicated that her BAC was at 0.15%, which is nearly double the legal limit of 0.08%. Once the officers were finished with processing her, Serafina was released pending her court appearance on March 9, 2023. Officer Aldrich issued Serafina the following summonses: Driving while intoxicated, failure to stop at stop sign, and driving with 0.08 of 1% or more of alcohol.
