En: But as soon as they are close enough, the parrot shouts, "You're a fool!"

En: Pieter and Lize step back, shocked by the parrot's rudeness.

En: Willem blushes with embarrassment as the bird continues to insult every person passing by with sharp Afrikaans words.

En: Willem says softly, but it only makes things worse.

En: The parrot's insults become more creative and lively.

En: The three friends realize they cannot stay at the market for the rest of the day with such an ill-mannered parrot.

En: Willem, already deeply regretful of his impulsive purchase, tries various ways to quiet the bird, but without success.

En: An elderly lady approaches them and laughs when she hears the parrot's final insult.

Af: "Weet jy," sê sy met 'n twinkeling in haar oog, "rare voëls soos hierdie het net 'n bietjie verstaan nodig.
En: "You know," she says with a twinkle in her eye, "eccentric birds like this just need a little understanding."

Af: "Willem kyk vraend na haar.
En: Willem looks at her questioningly.

En: The lady suggests they teach the parrot new, friendlier words.

En: With patience, they begin working with the parrot, treating him with love and encouragement.

En: Eventually, after a while of repetition and rewards when he says positive things, the parrot begins to change his tune.

Af: Nou, in plaas van beledigings, begin hy komplimente uitdeel.
En: Now, instead of insults, he starts giving out compliments.

Af: "Jy lyk mooi!
En: "You look beautiful!"

En: he squawks at Lize, who responds with a big smile.

En: Relieved that the situation has changed for the better and having learned from his impulsive purchase, Willem walks back to the market with his two best friends and a parrot that has now enhanced the atmosphere of joy at the Farmer's Market.

Af: Van daardie dag af, het Willem se papegaai bekend gestaan as die liefdevolste voël by die Boeremark, en Willem het altyd onthou om tweemaal te dink voordat hy 'n besluit neem.
En: From that day on, Willem's parrot became known as the most loving bird at the Farmer's Market, and Willem always remembered to think twice before making a decision.
