Measles is one of the world’s most contagious diseases. A measles vaccine has been available over 50 years. Yet our infants and children are being killed by a disease that can be prevented by this vaccine. Infants, children who are not vaccinated or have incomplete vaccination are at the greatest risk. The most serious complications can be: blindness, encephalitis (an infection that causes brain-swelling), severe diarrhea which causes dehydration, ear infections, or severe respiratory infections such as pneumonia. Most deaths are from complications, with children under 5 years mostly affected. Measles complications can result in lifelong disability such as permanent brain damage, blindness due to the red inflamed eyes or hearing loss due to ear infections.
