Aodhán Connolly, Director of the Northern Ireland retail consortium tells Phelim O'Neill that while sales increased at the start of COVID, the cost of doing business escalated as shops had to spend £10m to protect customers and staff. They also had to spend on computer and delivery infrastructure as their ways of doing business moved from instore selling to online. One major retailer is now at the point where they expected to be in 8 years’ time.
