Story Transcript:

Ja: 東京の大通りにある自動販売機の前で、ゆきはしっかりとスカートの裾を握り、軽く頭を下げた。
En: On a main street in Tokyo, Yuki firmly held the hem of her skirt in front of a vending machine, lightly bowing her head.

Ja: それが一見、ある種の礼儀正しい動作かもしれないということを、彼女はその瞬間まで全く無自覚だった。
En: She was completely unaware until that moment that this gesture might seem like a kind of etiquette.

Ja: ゆきは素敵な服を身につけ、一日中街を歩き回って友達と遊び、母のご飯を楽しみにして帰った。
En: Dressed in lovely clothes, Yuki spent the day walking around the city with friends, looking forward to her mother's cooking.

En: For weeks after, Yuki shared the story with her friends.

Ja: そしてその話は東京の一部となり、物語として語られるようになった。
En: It became part of Tokyo, told as a tale.

Ja: 「ゆきちゃん、あれはただの自動販売機だよ。
En: "Yuki, that's just a vending machine.

Ja: お辞儀をしなくていいよ」と友達がいたずらっぽく言った時、ゆきはうなずいた。
En: You don't need to bow," a friend mischievously teased, to which Yuki nodded.

Ja: 「うん、分かってるけど、少しでも心遣いが必要な瞬間があるかもしれないから、備えておくに越したことはないわ」と彼女は答えた。
En: "Yeah, I know, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared for moments where a little thoughtfulness might be needed," she replied.
