Story Transcript:

En: On a sunny Saturday morning, Jan eagerly waits at the entrance of Die Boeremark, a place where the air is always heavy with the smell of fresh baked goods and sweet fruits.

En: With his hat slightly askew, Jan is on a mission: he needs to buy a chicken for the stew he and his girlfriend, Anna, have planned for that evening.

Af: "Dit gaan die beste potjie ooit wees!" dink Jan by homself terwyl hy verby die stalletjies stap.
En: "This is going to be the best stew ever!" Jan thinks to himself as he walks past the stalls.

En: Among the rows of vegetables and handmade goods, he spots the poultry stall.

En: Jan's knowledge of poultry was vague, as he had never bought one himself.

En: He sees a large bird with a long neck and thinks it's a strange but impressive chicken.

En: Without a second thought, he points to the bird and says, "One chicken, please!"

En: The market vendor, struggling not to laugh out loud, nods and helps Jan get the huge bird, which is actually an ostrich, into a large coop.

En: Jan, never one to doubt information, pays without thinking twice and hurries to the bus stop, unaware of the chaos that lies ahead.

En: Trouble begins at the bus stop.

En: The ostrich, restless and uncomfortable, starts to flutter and kick, much to the amusement of the other commuters.

En: Jan tries to keep the coop still, but every kick from the ostrich makes the coop sway back and forth.

En: The bus arrives, and Jan struggles to get his "chicken" on board.

En: The bus driver looks at Jan, then at the bird, and shakes his head.

En: "You can't bring that thing on here!" he says.

En: But Jan pleads, "Please sir, I have no other way to get home!"

En: After much struggle, and with the help of a few curious passengers, Jan manages to maneuver the coop with the ostrich onto the bus.

En: The bus journey continues, but the ostrich's presence leads to a nightmare of flapping feathers and fluttering around.

Af: Anna, wat by die huis wag, wonder waar Jan bly.
En: Anna, waiting at home, wonders where Jan is.

En: When he finally arrives home, he throws his hands up in the air and says exhaustedly, "Anna, you won't believe what happened today!"

En: He opens the coop to show Anna his "chicken".

Af: Sy oë rek van ongeloof toe 'n reuse volstruis uitspring, reguit die sitkamer in.
En: Her eyes widen in disbelief as a huge ostrich springs out straight into the living room.

En: "But... I thought it was a chicken..."

Af: Anna begin lag so hard dat trane oor haar wange rol.
En: Anna bursts into laughter so hard that tears roll down her cheeks.

Af: "Jan, jy het 'n volstruis gekoop! ’n Volstruis!"
En: "Jan, you bought an ostrich! An ostrich!"

Af: Die situasie, hoewel absurd, het 'n snaakse wending geneem.
En: The situation, although absurd, takes a comical turn.

En: Anna, always the one with a plan, says, "Let's find someone with a farm who can take care of it."

En: With a few phone calls and some effort, a local farmer steps forward, happy to have an extra ostrich on his farm.

En: He loads the ostrich onto his truck and drives away, leaving Jan and Anna breathless and relieved.

En: The day ends with a meal that is much quieter than they had planned, but with a story they will tell for years to come.

En: Jan may not have brought home a chicken, but he did get an unforgettable memory and a valuable lesson: Always look twice before you buy, especially at Die Boeremark.
