A poignant novel that follows the lives of ten students at the Muhammadiyah Elementary School, the most impoverished school on the Indonesian island of Belitong. The story begins with a tense first day as the school faces an official threat of closure unless they can enroll at least ten new pupils. The arrival of a final student, Harun, saves the institution, allowing the dedicated teachers Pak Harfan and Bu Mus to begin their mission of education against all odds. Through the narrator’s eyes, the text portrays the extreme poverty of the Malay-Belitong community and the dilapidated state of the school building. Despite these hardships, the educators inspire the children with moral wisdom and stories of resilience, fostering a deep passion for learning. The narrative specifically highlights the character Lintang, a brilliant coastal boy who overcomes immense travel distances to attend class. Ultimately, the source emphasizes how educational opportunity and spiritual guidance can provide hope to those living in the most disadvantaged circumstances.
